Math 7 Quarter 1-Module 2

This document discusses solving problems involving sets using Venn diagrams. It provides examples of using Venn diagrams to represent the union and intersection of sets, as well as the difference between two sets. Students are asked to illustrate sets using Venn diagrams and to solve problems finding the union and intersection of sets. An example problem asks students to determine the number of students who like summer vacation only, Christmas vacation only, or either, given information about students' preferences in a class.

QUARTER 1 - Week 2
SOLVING PROBLEMS
INVOLVING SETS WITH THE
USE OF VENN DIAGRAMS
In Module 1, you have illustrated well-defined
sets, subsets, cardinality of sets, union and
intersection of sets and the difference of two
sets.
Venn diagrams were used to represent union
and intersection of sets and the difference of two
sets.
In this module, you will apply the basic
concepts on sets in solving problems using Venn
diagrams.
Lesson Objective:

After performing the activities in

this module, you are expected to
solve problems involving sets with
the use of Venn diagrams.
HISTORY OF VENN DIAGRAM
A Venn diagram or set diagram is a
diagram that shows all possible logical
relations between a finite collection of sets.
Venn diagrams were conceived around 1880
by John Venn. They are used to teach
elementary set theory, as well as illustrate
simple set relationships in probability, logic,
statistics linguistics and computer science.
Venn Diagram consist of rectangles and
closed curves usually circles. The universal
is represented usually by rectangles and its
subsets by circle.
Example of Venn Diagram
U

A B
The rectangle represents the universal set. (U)
Circles represent subsets. (Set A and Set B)
The two subsets have no elements in common.
Example of Venn Diagram

A B

The two subsets have elements in common.

Problem 1:Illustrating Set
Illustrate a Venn diagram for this group
of sets.

U = {x/x is a distinct letter in the word: alphabet}

A = {x/x is a distinct letter in the word: heal}
B = {x/x is the vowel in the English alphabet}
Problem 1:Illustrating Set
U = {x/x is a distinct letter in the word: alphabet}
Rooster Notation U = {a,l,p,h,a,b,e,t}

A = {x/x is a distinct letter in the word: heal}

Rooster Notation A = {h,e,a,l}

B = {x/x is the vowel in the English alphabet}

Rooster Notation B = {a,e,i,o,u}
Problem 1: Illustrating Set
U = {a,l,p,h,a,b,e,t}
A = {h,e,a,l}
B = {a,e,i,o,u}
List down the common element: {a,e}

Problem 2: Set Operation
Union of Set Intersection of Set

Try this:
Illustrate using Venn Diagram

M = {x/x is a prime number between 1 and 10}

N = {x/x is an even number from 1 to 10}

Find: 1. AᴜB
2. A∩B
Let’s Check:
First, list down the elements of each set
M = {x/x is a prime number between 1 and 10}
M = { 2, 3, 5, 7}
N = {x/x is an even number from 1 to 10}
N = { 2, 4, 6, 8 }
Common Element is {2}
U
3 1. Aᴜ4B={2,3,4,5,6,7,8}
5 2 6
7 8 = {2}
2. A∩B
M N
Exercise 2:
Given: Sets A, B and U in a Venn diagram.

1. What are the elements of Set A?

2. What are the elements of Set B?
3. Find AᴜB
4. Find A∩B
Let’s Check:
Given: Sets A, B and U in a Venn diagram.

1. What are the elements of Set A?

A = {a, b, c, d, e}

2. What are the elements of Set B?

B = { e, i, o, u}

3. Find AᴜB
{a, b, c, d, e, i, o, u}

4. Find A∩B
{e}
Problem Solving:
In a class of 35 students, 19 students like
summer vacation, 25 students like
Christmas vacation and 12 students like
both.
Find the number of students who like;
a. Summer vacation only
b. Christmas vacation only
c. Either summer vacation or Christmas
vacation
Construct a Venn diagram.
U

S C

19 + 25 = 44
44 - 35 = 9
Students who like Summer Vacation = 19
Students who like Christmas Vacation = 25 19 - 9 = 10
25 - 9 = 16
10 + 9 + 16 = 35
Construct a Venn diagram.

Find the number of students who like;

a. Summer vacation only 10
b. Christmas vacation only 16
c. Either summer vacation or Christmas vacation 9
