What is Biodiesel?
BIODIESEL, A FUEL COMPOSED OF MONO-ALKYL
ESTERS OF LONG CHAIN FATTY ACIDS DERIVED
FROM VARIETY OF VEGETABLE OILS OR ANIMAL
FATS, DESIGNATED AS B100, AND CONFIRMING
TO DIFFERENT QUALITY STANDARDS E.G. ASTM
D 6751, EN14214 OR IS 15607.

BIODIESEL- A NATIONAL PROJECT
 Low cost high employment generation potential
 Import substitute, reduce reliance on imports, Energy
security
 Environment protection –
Lower emissions of CO
5% blending at GSRTC, currently running
between Gandhinagar & Ahmedabad ,has reduced
the smoke emissions by about 15%
Renewable source of energy
Effective control CO2 balance
FIELD TRIALS SINCE EARLY 2004
 Biodiesel can be blended with diesel in any ratio or even substitute the diesel
100% without modification to the engine design
 Has better lubricity properties, can be used as a lubricating additive at the oil
refinery stage itself (we are conducting field trials on this with a major oil
producer of the nation)
 1% Biodiesel can substitute up to 40% sulphur content of the diesel
 1% BD for LSD & 2% BD for ULDS sufficient to maintain Lubricity at 460
micron( source IOC R&D)
 The engine life will be longer because of lower wear and tear of the metal
parts using Biodiesel
 The GSRTC buses needed a weekly routine maintenance, but with using B5 grade are
reporting for maintenance only 3,4 weeks.
 Has better cetane number(>47)
 Safer than diesel due very high flash point (>110 o C)
 Low corrosion of metal and other tubing materials
PROPOSED COST OF BIODIESEL
“How can you sell Jatropha seeds more expensive than wheat, if it doesn't need fertilizer, irrigation &
labor as compared to wheat farming ”
M.S.Ramachandran (Ex Chairman IOC)

Oil recoverable per ton of seed( based on

reported 33-50% oil contents) 0.333

Cost of Seeds Rs. per ton

(based on discussions at NABARD) 4000

Crushing and refining Rs. Per ton

(industrial average cost of crushing) 600

A Cost Oil Rs. per ton 13814

Processing Charges to Biodiesel

B including all overheads and profits 5000

Total Cost per ton of Biodiesel A+B 18814

Initial Developments in Biodiesel
 PLANNING COMMISSION REPORT (2003) SUGGESTED JATROPHA
CURCAS AS A POTENTIAL FEEDSTOCK FOR BIODIESEL
PRODUCTION.

A NATIONAL BIODIESEL MISSION LAUNCHED BY PLANNING

COMMISSION TO MEET THE 5% BIODIESEL REQUIREMENT OF
INDIA.

WHY JATROPHA THE SUITABLE CHOICE ?
 Thrives on any type of soil
 Needs minimal inputs or management
 Has no insect pests
 Not browsed by cattle or sheep
 Can survive long periods of drought
 Propagation by seed/cutting is easy
 Rapid growth
 Yield from the 2nd year onwards
 Yield from established plantations 5 tonne per ha.
 30% oil from seeds by expelling
 Seed meal excellent organic manure
QUALITY SEEDLING PREPARATION

 10 x 20 cm bag
 Germination -3 days
 3-6 months old seedlings

INTERCROPPING WITH JATROPHA
ANTI-EROSIVE PROPERTIES

 Reduces wind and water erosion of soil

 Improved absorption of water by soil
TARGET OUTPUT PER HECTARE
Estimated Biodiesel production
per Hectare = 3,000 litres/700Gal

Potential yields of 12 tonnes per hectare and

 2500 trees per hectare 55% oil Extraction are also attainable
 produces

BIGGEST HURDLE
 We are one of the largest importer of vegetable oils
 about 50 lack tons of vegetable oil is imported annually
 Our cost of production is much higher than the international cost.
 It will be a pipe dream to assume that very low cost Jatropha oil will not go into
undesired end uses
 My experience during very early stages about the oils
 Edible
 Soaps
 Oleo chemicals
 We will have to address the entire issue of short fall and make our nation surplus in
vegetable oils.
 Attention will be needed on land reforms and efficient utilization of this valuable source in
our national interest India has got 181 mn ha. Of cultivable land as compared to 188mn hn.
Land of entire S.E. Asia including China.
 Make the agriculture sector self sustaining and creating attractive investment
opportunity
 This will bring in much needed technology
 Planning and management
 Reliable supply chain
 farmer
 manufacturer
 Marketing companies
 end user
WHY SHOULD WE SUPPORT BIODIESEL ?
 What is our nations biggest asset ?
 Intelligent and Hard working human capital.
 The Oil seeds cultivation on large scale
 Production by mass
 Will stimulate rural economy and make a village self-sufficient, no import
of energy will be required.
 Oil seeds/oil will generate revenue
 The oil cake will generate biogas
 Spent cake will be used as manure
 Thus completing the entire cycle
 Return economic control to the people!
 Naturally decentralize wealth.
 Will create unprecedented job opportunities in the history of mankind
KEY BENEFITS TO THE NATION
 Alternate source of fuel—import substitute
 Economically viable and self sustaining
 Opportunity for rural employment generation
 Sustain development and poverty elevation by decentralization
of industrial activities
 Stop land erosion, better preservation of ground water table
 In irrigation fed land Intercrop growing can provide the short
duration crops
 Will improve the standard of leaving in the Rural areas
 Generate further opportunities for growth of ancillary industries.
 The KYTO convention- carbon credit
SUMMARY
 Biodiesel is an renewable fuel for diesel engines that can be
made from virtually any oil or fat feedstock.
 Biodiesel with a potential consumption of 15000 million
litres can have a retail turnover of more than US$ 9000 mn
per year
 It can provide huge rural employment potential of 40 to 50
million families and transform the rural economy
 Remote village electrification and power for agriculture
application – Energy grown & used by village.
 The technology choice is a function of desired capacity,
feedstock type and quality, alcohol recovery, and catalyst
recovery.
SUMMARY
 The dominant factor in biodiesel production is the
feedstock cost which around 70%, with capital cost
contributing only about 7 % of the product cost.
Therefore high FFA, lower quality feedstock should
be promoted for biodiesel production in India.
 For meeting energy security and electricity for all, it
is necessary to develop and commission small to
medium capacity biodiesel unit at village &
community level..
 Maintaining product quality is also essential for the
growth of the biodiesel industry in India.
