AXIOLOGY
 From the greek word AXIOS “Worthy”
also called theory of value
 Answer the questions “what is value”?
 A centers upon the nature of different
types of value
Types of Value
 ETHICS – Which investigate both the nature of
right and wrong and the nature of good in
individual and social conduct

 AESTHETICS – which investigates the nature


of such thing as beauty and arts.
ETHICS
 Is also known as moral philosophy
 Is a branch of philosophy that involves
systematizing, defending and recommending
concepts of right and wrong
 Is a complement to aesthetics in the philosophical
field of axiology
Philosophers Concern

1. Explicate the nature of such judgement in


general
2. Provide criteria for determining what is ethically
right and wrong
3. Analyze the reasons we have for holding them to
be correct
Two types of Ethical Theories

1. Consequentialist or teleological ethical theory –


This theory claims that what makes an action right or
wrong are the consequences of the action.

2. Motivational or Deontological Ethical Theory –


The theory holds an opposition to a
consequentialist theory that it is not the
consequences but the motivation which prompts
the agent to do an action which makes an action
right or wrong.
Types of Ethics
 META ETHICS – it is about the theoretical
meaning and references of moral proposition and
how their truth values may be determined.
 NORMATIVE ETHICS – it is about the
practical means of determining a moral course of
action.
 APPLIED ETHICS – it is about how moral
outcomes can be achieved in specifiec situation.
 DESCRIPTIVE ETHICS – it is also known as
comparative ethics, it is the study of peoples belief
about morality.
AESTHETICS
 Aesthetics is a branch of philosophy dealing with
the nature of art, beauty and taste, with the
creation and appreciation of beauty. It is more
scientifically defined as the study of sensory,
emotional value, sometimes called judgement of
sentiment and taste.
Concept of Aesthetics
 Aesthetics also called esthetics, the philosophical
study of beauty and taste. It is closely relate to the
philosophy of arts, which is concerned with the
nature of art and the concepts in terms of which
individual works of art are interpreted and evaluated.
 Whether to define aesthetic experience according to
its phenomenological or representational content.
 How best to understand the relation between aesthetic
value and aesthetic experience.
Types of Value

1. MATERIAL VALUE – refers to the values of


peoples daily neccessities, such as commodities.

2. SPIRITUAL VALUE – refers to the faculties of


intellect emotion and will or the values of
trueness, goodness and beauty.
