Addition and Subtraction of Similar and Dissimilar Fractions
SUB-TASK:
1. Define and identify similar fractions and dissimilar fractions.
2. Perform addition and subtraction of fractions.
3. Determine Least Common Denominator (LCD) between Dissimilar Fractions.

Like fractions are fractions with the same denominator. You can add
and subtract like fractions easily - simply add or subtract the numerators
and write the sum over the common denominator.
Before you can add or subtract fractions with different denominators,
you must first find equivalent fractions with the same denominator, like
this:
 Find the smallest multiple (LCM) of both numbers.
 Rewrite the fractions as equivalent fractions with the LCM as
the denominator.
When working with fractions, the LCM is called the least common
denominator (LCD).

To add fractions, you have to have "common" (shared)
denominators. As the proverb says, you can only add apples to apples,
not apples to oranges. In the context of adding fractions, you can't
combine, say, 1/4 and 2/5. Because they are fractions of different
types (one being fourths and the other being fifths), they are "apples and
oranges". To add them, you first have to convert to an all-apples
denominator; in this case, you'd convert to twentieths, getting 5/20 and
8/20 as your all-apples fractions.
Hey, students!
Since you already know the ways on how
to add and subtract Similar and
Dissimilar Fractions, this is now the time
to test your understanding.

ACTIVITY 1
Similar or Dissimilar?
Similar Fractions are fractions that have the same or common denominator. They are often
called like fractions. If they are NOT same or common, then they are dissimilar fractions.

Let’s try to identify the following pairs of fractions as SIMILAR or DISSIMILAR.

 Directions:
Write S if they are Similar Fractions or D if they are Dissimilar Fractions. Write your
answer on the box.
1. 6. Easy
2. 7. 16 right?
3. 8. Keep it
4. 9. up!
5. 10. 2
ACTIVITY 2
Addition and Subtraction of Similar Fractions
In addition or subtraction of Similar Fractions, we only add and subtract the numerator and
rewrite the same or common denominator.
Answers should always be expressed in simplified form.

Now, let’s try to perform the indicated operation of the following similar fractions.

 Directions:
Perform the indicated operation.

ACTIVITY 3
Least Common Denominator (LCD)
Least Common Denominator (LCD) is the smallest denominator that is exactly divisible by
every member of a set of numbers. This is used to make dissimilar fractions be similar by
changing them into equivalent fractions.

 Directions:
Find the Least Common Denominator of the following fractions.
1. = 6. =
2. = 7. = You can find
the LCD through
