BASKETBALL

Basic Skills in Basketball

1. Dribbling
Refers to the manuevering of a ball under the control of a single
player in a given direction, while avoiding defender’s attempts to get the
ball from dribbling player. Such control may be with the legs (e. g
association football), hand (e. g basketball), Stick (e. g Field hockey), or
swimming strokes (water polo). A successful dribble will bring the ball
past defenders legally and create opportunities to sore.
TYPES OF DRIBBLING
In dribbling the basketball, the hand should be in a cup shape position, with fingers spread
out on the ball, elbow extended, the fingers and wrist flexed. Palms should not be used.

The control or Low Dribble

Control or Low dribble is done as a player’s defence from a defender closely guarding the
ball. The ball is dribbled using step and slide movement and free hand on the ball slightly away
from the defender at knee level or lower making it harder for the defender to knock it. Eyes and
head should be on teammates for any opening.
The High or Speed Dribble
The speed dribble is usually done in making fast break or after making a steal in an open
court. The body is almost slightly leaning forward. The ball is dribbled on waist level or higher to
gain the maximum speed.

Crossover Dribble
Crossover dribble allows quick change in direction. The ball is dribbled as low as possible
alternately passing from left to right hand defending on the position of the defender. Weight can
be shifted on opposite direction but the should stay low in protect the ball from the defence by
lowering your right shoulder and using your trunk.
The Behind the Back Dribble
This advanced dibbling technique involves dribbling the ball behind the back either once
(as a form of crossover) or continuously. Dribbling once a few times in this way can be
effective in a given situation, but doing so for prolonged periods of time brings dangers
of losing the ball or a turn over.
The Between the legs Dribble
This simply means dribbling the ball low while alternately transferring it to opposite
directions passing the ball in between the legs using right and left hand on both sides of the legs.

The Spin or Reverse Dribble

Another technique for change of direction is the reverse dribble. It is used when guarded by
too many defenders and making the crossover dribble impossible. When the ball is on the right,
make a hard stop for a second and pivot to the left or opposite direction with back of the body for
defense. The ball should be kept low while switching is quickly an alternately being done.
Continue dribbling the ball with the left hand, after completing the turn keeping head up to see the
floor.
