Adaptable Facade

An adaptive facade is a building envelope that can change its functions, features, or behavior over time in response to changing performance needs and external conditions in order to improve overall building performance. Interest in adaptive building materials and dynamic facade systems has increased in recent decades as innovations in glazing and more advanced solar control technologies now allow facades to react to different external factors and provide higher performance and comfort. Examples of adaptive facades include switchable windows, dynamic glazing with phase change materials, lumiducts, active transparent facades, multifunctional modules, and kinetic facades.

What is an “Adaptive facade”?

An adaptive facade is a building envelope consisting of multifunctional and highly adaptive systems that is able to
change its functions, features, or behavior over time in response to transient performance requirements and
boundary conditions with the aim of improving the overall building performance. Adaptive facades exist in the form
of many different technologies, materials, systems, and components.
The interest in designing and developing
adaptive building materials and dynamic
facade systems has increased considerably in
the past decades. The innovations in glazing
and the emergence of more advanced
technologies for solar control allows
designing adaptive facades with aesthetic,
responsive, and intelligent features. These
technologies are able to react to different
external factors and to deliver higher
building performance and occupant comfort
or solar control. Hence, adaptive facades
exist in the form of many different
technologies, materials, systems, and
components which emerged in close relation
to the facade requirements shown in figure.
Examples of applications of adaptive facades

• Switchable NIR Reflecting Windows

• Dynamic Glazing and Shadings Embedding PCMs
• Lumiduct
• Active Transparent Facades
• Multifunctional Facade Modules
• Kinetic Facades
