• The term "history" has now come to be applied to accounts of events that are narrated in a
chronological order, and deal with the past of mankind.
• E. H. Carn defined history as an "unending dialogue between the present and the past."
IMPORTANCE OF HISTORY

our present.
• Studying history can provide us with insight into our cultures of origin as well as cultures with which we might
be less familiar, thereby increasing cross-cultural awareness and understanding.
• one can study history because it allows one to exercise their critical thinking skills.
• The study of history can serve as a roadmap for individuals and for countries as they make decisions about future
activities.
• By studying history, we can learn from past mistakes so we don’t make the same ones in the future.
MEANING AND TYPES OF HISTORICAL SOURCES
• Historical sources are, at their most basic level, something that tells us about history. It may be a
document, a picture, a sound recording, a book, a cinema film, a television program or an object. Any
sort of artifact from the period in question that conveys information can qualify as a source.
• There are two main types of historical sources: primary sources and secondary sources.
• Primary sources include documents or artifacts created by a witness to or participant in an event.
They can be firsthand testimony or evidence created during the time period that you are studying.
• Primary sources may include diaries, letters, interviews, oral histories, photographs, newspaper
articles, government documents, poems, novels, plays, and music. The collection and analysis of
primary sources is central to historical research.
A secondary source is something that was not created first-hand by someone who participated
in the historical era. Secondary sources are usually created by historians based on the
historian's interpretation of primary sources. Since they are usually created long after the event
occurred, secondary sources are influenced by the passing of time, offering a different vantage
point than someone who participated in the event or directly influenced the issue.
secondary sources vary in form and may include articles, books, and interviews with experts,
for example.
