Logarithms of Numbers Less Than One
Logarithms of Numbers Less Than One
TOPIC : LOGARITHMS OF
NUMBERS LESS THAN 1
DURATION : 40 MINUTES
FACILITATOR : MR AFOLABI.
LESSON OBJECTIVES: By the end of this lesson students
will be able to:
i) recall the use of logarithm tables to perform calculations
with numbers greater than 1.
ii) Compare characteristics of logarithms with
corresponding numbers in standard form.
iii) use logarithm tables to perform calculations with
numbers less than 1, including : multiplication and
division, powers and roots of numbers.

The table shows that fractions such as one tenth, one
O
hundredth, … can be expressed as negative powers of 10.
A number in the form A where A is a number between 1
and 10 and n is an integer is said to be in standard form.
Examples
O
Express the following numbers in standard form
1) 265
2) 0. 394
3) 0.00394
O Solution
O
1) 265 =
2) 26.5 =
3) 2.65 =
4) 0.394 =
5) 0.00394 =
Note: In converting to standard form, the decimal point is
placed or positioned after the first significant figure e.g 1
to 9. In (3) above, the decimal point is already it is
supposed to be and that is why the power of 10 is 0.
When
O a number is in standard form the power of 10 is the
characteristic or integer. For example is in standard form.
When checking the logarithm of this number , the
characteristic is 2 and we check 26 under 5 and difference
under will be added. This gives 2. 4239.
O Multiplication and division
O
To multiply and divide numbers, first express them as logarithms and then apply
the addition and subtraction laws of indices to the logarithms.
