Solving Quadratic Equation by Using The Quadratic Formula

The document provides an overview of using the quadratic formula to solve quadratic equations. It defines the quadratic formula as x = (-b ±√(b2 - 4ac))/2a, where a ≠ 0 and b2 - 4ac ≠ 0. Examples are worked through to demonstrate obtaining the a, b, and c values from quadratic equations in standard form and using the formula to solve for x. Students are given a practice problem and assessment to test their understanding.

Quarter I Week 3:

Solving Quadratic Equation by

Using the Quadratic Formula
By Ms. Carla Atienza
Objective:
 In this lesson, you will learn how to use the quadratic formula
to solve any quadratic equation.
Quadratic Formula

Used to solve any kind of quadratic equation.

  2
−𝑏 ± √ 𝑏 −4 𝑎𝑐
𝑥=
2𝑎

Where a 0 and b2 – 4ac 0.

“x equals the opposite of b, plus or minus the square root of b

squared minus 4ac, all divided/over by 2a.
Rule for Using the Quadratic Formula
 The equation must be in standard form.

ax2 + bx + c = 0

Note: It will be helpful to list out the value of a, b, and c.

Getting the values of a, b, and c
Example 1: x2 + 5x = 4

Standard Form: x2 + 5x – 4 = 0
Values:
a=1
b=5
c = -4
Getting the values of a, b, and c
Example 2: -4x2 = 8x – 3

Standard Form: -4x2 – 8x + 3 = 0

Values:
a = -4
b = -8
c=3
Getting the values of a, b, and c
Example 3: 10x – 1 = 4x2

Standard Form: -4x2 + 10x – 1 = 0

Values:
a = -4
b = 10
c = -1
Examples:
1) 2x2 + 3x = 27

Standard Form: 2x2 + 3x – 27 = 0

Values:
a=2
b=3
c = -27
Examples:
1)   2x2 + 3x – 27 = 0

Values: a= 2, b= 3, c= -27
Use the formula
Substitute the values
Simplify

Solve for the value of x

Checking:
 If x=-
If x=3
2x2 + 3x – 27 = 0 2x2 + 3x – 27 = 0
2(3)2 + 3(3) – 27 = 0 2(- )2 + 3(- ) – 27 = 0
18 + 9 – 27 = 0 2() – () – 27 = 0
0=0 – – 27 = 0
0=0
Examples:
2) x2 + 2x – 3 = 0

Standard Form: x2 + 2x – 3 = 0
Values:
a=1
b=2
c = -3
Examples:
2)   x2 + 2x – 3 = 0

Values: a = 1, b = 2, c = -3
Use the formula
Substitute the values
Simplify

Solve for the value of x

Checking:
If x=1 If x=-3
x2 + 2x – 3 = 0 x2 + 2x – 3 = 0
(1)2 + 2(1) – 3 = 0 (-3)2 + 2(-3) – 3 = 0
1+2–3=0 9–6–3=0
0=0 0=0
Examples:
3) x2 – 7x = 10

Standard Form: x2 – 7x – 10 = 0
Values:
a=1
b = -7
c = -10
Examples:
3)   x2 - 7x = -10

Values: a = 1, b = -7,c = -10
Use the formula
Substitute the values
Simplify
Solve for the value of x
Examples:
4) x2 – 4x = 14

Standard Form: x2 – 4x – 14 = 0
Values:
a=1
b = -4
c = -14
Examples:

4) x2 - 7x = -10 Values: a = 1, b = -4, c = -14
Use the formula
