WHAT IS A PROJECT .01
A project is defined as a sequence of Tasks that must be completed to KEY WORDS
attain a certain outcome. According to the Project Management Institute (
Tasks
PMI), the term Project refers to ” to any temporary endeavor with a
definite beginning and end”. Depending on its complexity, it can be Start – End
managed by a single person or hundreds.

Characteristics of the Project

1. A clear start and end date : There are projects that last several years KEY WORDS
but a project cannot go on forever. It needs to have a clear beginning, a
Unique
definite end, and an overview of what happens in between.
Start – End
2. A project creates something new: Every project is unique, producing
Boundaries
something that did not previously exist. A project is a one-time, once-
off activity, never to be repeated exactly the same way again.

3. A project has boundaries: A project operates within certain

constraints of time, money, quality, and functionality. We’ll see more
about this in later sections.

Phase 1. Programming: Asking Questions, Defining Goals
Meet & Greet: 1st step
Questions Interior Designers Should Ask Their Clients in The First
Meeting:
Meeting, getting to know each other, and having an exchange of ideas is the first step
• What's your budget? ...
• Can you describe the ages and characteristics
of who will be using the space?
• Do any users of this space have any special
needs that need to be taken into account?
• What is your timeframe? ...
• Have you worked with a designer before? ...
• Who makes the decisions on this project? ...
• What do you consider expensive? ...
• How did you hear about our firm? ...
• What is your design style or vision? ... 9

• Do you use Pinterest?

Programming: Asking Questions, Defining
Goals Meet & Greet: 1st step
This phase is all about asking questions and defining goals. We want to
understand as much information as possible up front about your vision and your
desired outcome. We explore how a space functions (or doesn’t function), how
it needs to function in the future, who will use the space and how their needs
impact the design. We spend time discussing a client’s needs, wants and desired
outcomes.

Programming includes the following tasks:

•Information gathered from client interview to determine the client’s goals and
objectives
•Visit the jobsite to gain information about the physical spaces.
•Setting project parameters like initial schedule and budget projections.
•Interview users of the space
•Inventory and analyze existing furnishings and equipment

Phase 2. Interior Design Inspiration
• Prepare the concept, sketches mood
boards, photo collages, color compositions and
materials that will work as a guidelines to
follow along all the interior design process

• We collect interior design inspirations to create

a tailor made project suitable for your
personality. The possibilities are endless:
minimalist or eclectic style? Luxury or classic
design? Black and white or a color palette with
lively accents? What remains to discover is the 11
option that suits you best.
Interior Design Process
Schematic Design Phase

It involves the execution of preliminary design

decisions. These are accomplished through:
• Written concept
• Bubble diagram
• Spatial diagram
• Block plans
• Any appropriate sketches
• Applying regulations and building codes. Spatial Plan
(Check Kuwait Building Codes website)
• Asking for CLIENT SIGN-OFF
After review and client approval of preliminary
graphic documents, the designer can move to the
next phase of the project.

BUDGET MANAGEMENT

• Balance between quality and price in line with your

project budget.

• Decide WHO/WHAT/WHERE

• An effective cost planning is essential in an interior

design project, so as to be able to develop the project to
its best.

• You should be aware of the possibility of an increase of

costs as as you carry out the project. Always inform the
client. 13
Interior Design Process
Phase 3. Design Development (deliverables)
• Refining Solutions, Developing the Details
• It involves final design decisions and preparation of
appropriate documents for plans, specifications, and any final
presentation graphics.
• Preparing a complete project budget
• Generating 3D models and sketches of key ideas and specialty
components;
• Researching, presenting, refining, and determining finishes,
fixtures, and furniture;
• Referring to local regulations and building codes for
compliance;
• Reviewing preliminary consultant drawings; and
• Implementing various preliminary 2D plans including ceiling
plans, finish plans, elevations and more.

14

Project Schedule/Timeline
A project timeline is a visual list of tasks or activities placed in chronological order, which
lets project managers view the entirety of the project in one place. A project timeline typically
takes the form of a horizontal bar chart, where each task is given a name and a corresponding
start and end date.
Why do we need it?
• It helps the designer to maintain control over the project.
• It can takes many forms depending on who is using the
information.
• The set up culd be on daily basis or week by week
description of what must be done to reach the target
completion date. 15

Phase 4. Contract Document
Documenting Accepted Solutions for Bidding & Construction
•Creating the documents needed to get bids from contractors from
which they will construct your project

•Finalizing details for floor plans, elevations, cabinet and finish

specifications, lighting plans, door and window schedules, etc.

•Review and coordination of electrical, plumbing, mechanical

details according to project scope.

•Deliverables: Finalized set of contract documents ready for

bidding and permitting. Any further changes will be
documented as addenda or change requests/ change orders.
•Sign-off: Client signs off on documents received. 17

Phase 5. Contract Administration
•Bidding, Permitting, Construction, Procurement, &
Installation
•It involves final preparation of the all construction or
working drawings, schedules, and specification needed to
build and install the project.

•Integrate a package that consists of drawings

•Involving general contractor and sub-contractors

•Communicate with the client to facilitate their understanding

and approval of the contract document package;

•Prepare materials required to aid the client in their

application for a building permit.
