Understanding and Using Procedure Text

• Procedure text is text that


reveals how to do or create
something. The text becomes a
guide for readers to complete a
task through a series of steps.
• Examples of using procedure text
include:
• recipe (food recipe)
• itenerary (itinerary)
• instruction manual (user manual)
• Procedure text may be studied very
little, but in fact it has a very
important role for today's society who
is accustomed to technology.

Procedure Text Structure
• Explanation structure
• Introductory Paragraph or Title Introductory paragraph
(opening paragraph) or just a title (title) that states the purpose
of the procedure.
• List of Materials List of materials / tools needed to complete
the procedure which can be in the form of lists, paragraphs, or
not mentioned.
• Sequence of Steps A series of steps to complete a procedure in
the right order.
Characteristics of Grammatical Procedure
Text.
• Usually procedure text is characterized by the following.

The sentence in the sequence of steps is in the form of a


command so that it uses a verb (verb) in an imperative mood (the
subject of the sentence does not need to be added because "you"
is implied).
Imperative Example

• 1 You Add water to the mixture.


• (Add water to the mixture.)
• 2 You Beat egg whites until they
are stiff.
• (Beat the egg whites until stiff.)
• Procedure text uses numbers
(numbering) or sequence adverbs
to indicate the order in which the
task is carried out.

• Example of Sequence Adverb


• first, second, next, after, finally
Use of adverbials (in the form of
prepositional phrases) to provide
information on duration / time (how
long? When?), Place / position
(where?), And / or how (how?) An
action should be performed.
• Adverbial Example
• 1 Pour the batter into cupcake cups.
• (Pour batter into cupcake bowls.)
Place
• 2 Cook them for 5 minutes.
• (Cook them for 5 minutes) duration
Examples of Procedure Text and Their Meanings
• Blended Iced Cappuccino
• Ingredients:
• 1/2 cup of strong coffee
• 1 cup of ice cubes
• 2 cups skim milk
• 3 tablespoons of sugar
• 1/4 cup of cream
• whipped cream (optional)
• Instructions:
• Brew a cup of coffee. Let it cool.
• Put the ice cubes in the blender and pour the coffee over them.
• Add milk, sugar, and cream.
• Blend them all on medium speed until the ice is completely crushed.
• Pour the mixture into a glass.
• Top it off with whipped cream.

• Here is an example of procedure text

• How to Make Ice Cream

• Materials:

• 2 cups milk or cream


• 2 tablespoons sugar
• 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
• Several cups of Ice
• 1 cup salt
• You need these supplies to make ice cream
• Tub or large coffee can to hold salt and ice
• Glass bowl or small coffee can
• Electric mixer or whisk
• Ice cream scoop
• Storage container for freezer

• Steps:
• First, setting up the cooling apparatus. Stir ice and salt in the larger container.
• Then, combine the ingredients. Mix together the milk, sugar, and vanilla in the glass bowl. Then, set this
bowl in the tub filled with ice and rock salt, making sure that the salt water does not spill into the bowl.
Here are the characteristics of Procedure text:

• Using the Simple Present Tense.


• Use an imperative sentence which is a sentence form that is
usually used to give commands. For example don't mix, turn
on, cut into slices and so on.
• Using connective of sequence (then, while, next, etc.).
• Using numbering (first, second, third, and so on).
• Using verb actions. For example, turn, plug, put, etc.).
• Using adverb. For example: slowly, carefully, and so on.
• The essence of the text of the procedure
is that it contains several steps that must
be done to achieve the final result (using
a command sentence pattern) using
short, clear and concise language so that
it is easily understood by the reader
