Introduction
Nagpur is the third largest city of the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is the 13th
largest urban agglomeration in India and one of the proposed smart
cities from Maharashtra.
With the rapid urbanization and the smart city development plan, the adverse
impact on the natural resources and environment will go on increasing.
Amongst these, the rivers in the city namely, Pili River, Nag River and Pora
River will have significant effect.
These rivers carry sewage from open drain and nallahs from unsewered area
of the city as well as storm water during monsoon months.
With fast development activities along the sides of river, the possibility of
flooding of the areas in the vicinity of the bank of river increases.
So, proper river training works must be established, and boundaries of the
river bank shall be fixed in order to prevent flood during peak flows in the
river.
The study aims to evaluate the behaviour of Pili River using MIKE 11 by
hydrodynamic simulation of water levels and flows for storms of different
return periods.

Need of the Study
Rapid development near the vicinity of the river.
To have a proper land use pattern based on the likelihood of the
submergence arising from the flood.
Methodology
Collection of Data.
Watershed analysis using CartoDEM in ArcGIS.
Flood Frequency Analysis.
Hydrodynamic simulation in terms of flow, water level at different cross
sections of the river using MIKE11.
Transferring of the results to GIS platform for delineation of flood lines along
the river for better land use management.
Estimation of Storm Water Runoff
The peak runoff resulting from the storm of 50 year return period was estimated from
Gorewada lake sub-watershed basin and the drain joining the river, using rationale formula.
Gumbel’s Distribution Method which is a widely used probability distribution function was
used to estimate the rainfall intensities for different return periods and durations.
These intensities for different return periods and durations were formulated using IDF
curves.
