Seminar Topic: Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Voice Technology

Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a field of artificial intelligence that deals with interactions between computers and human language. NLP aims to understand language, process it, and extract information. It has roots in symbolic systems from the 1950s and now uses statistical and neural models. NLP techniques include syntactic analysis, semantic analysis, and applications involve sentiment analysis, machine translation, chatbots, and more. Future areas of growth include AI-enabled NLP and expanding markets.

What is Natural Language Processing(NLP)?
■ Natural language processing(NLP) is a field of computer science, artificial intelligence
and computer linguistics concerned with interaction between computers and human
languages driven by the advances in machine learning.

4
Why do we need NLP?
The world is now connected globally due to the advancement in technology and devices.

■ Analyzing tons of data

■ Identifying various languages and dialects
■ Applying quantitative analysis
■ Handling ambiguities

Goal of NLP
The main goal of NLP is to understand various languages,
process them and extract information from them.

5
History of NLP?
Natural language has it’s roots in 1950s

 Symbolic NLP (1950s)

-John Searle’s experiment and conceptual ontologies.

 Statistical NLP (1990s - 2010)

-Introduction to machine learning algorithms.

 Neural NLP (Present time)

-Representation learning and deep learning.

6
Voice Recognition
Voice recognition is an interdisciplinary subfield of computer science and computational
linguistics that develops methodologies and technologies that enable the recognition
and translation of spoken language into text by computers.

Challenges in Natural language
understanding(NLU)
Natural language has an extremely rich form and structure and it is very ambiguous.

 Lexical ambiguity
 Syntactical ambiguity
 Semantic ambiguity
 Anaphoric ambiguity
 Pragmatic ambiguity
 Inflective ambiguity

NLP Techniques
Syntactic Analysis Semantic Analysis

 Lemmatization  Named entity recognition

 Morphological segmentation  Word sense disambiguation

Conclusion
■ As we have seen, NLP generally focuses on the interaction among humans and
computer and provides a wide set of techniques and tools which can be applied in all
the areas of life. By learning them and using them in our everyday interactions, our life
quality would be highly improved.
■ NLP techniques help us improving our communications, our goal reaching and the
outcomes we receive from every interaction. Somewhere, indirectly we all are
interacting with NLP without being aware of it.
■ Guaranteed more changes will be seen in the future in all forms and aspects of life and
really there is a bright future in NLP and definitely it will take the technology to the
next level.
