Drought: Natural Disaster

Drought is a lack of water over an extended period, usually 3 months or more with at least 50% less rainfall than normal. There are three types of drought defined by their impact: meteorological drought affects rainfall, hydrological drought impacts water levels, and agricultural drought concerns crop water availability. Drought occurs when not enough rain falls for a prolonged time, drying out the land. As drought continues, wells decrease in depth, rivers and streams slow, soil and plants dry up, and cracks form in the parched earth. Drought has short and long term consequences on economies, environments, and human health and safety. Solutions include conserving water, planting more vegetation, limiting greenhouse gas emissions, and aiding those affected

What is drought ?

• Drought is a lack of shortage of water for an a unusually

long period of time involving 50% less than the usual
rainfall over 3 months
What is drought ?

There are 3 types of droughts :

• Meteorological drought – related to rainfall
amounts
• Hydrological drought – determined by water levels
in reservoirs
• Agricultural drought – related to the availability of
water for corps
What causes drought ?

• Droughts happen when there is not

enough rain for a long period of time.
There is so little precipitation (rain,
snow, sleet) that the whole region
starts to dry out.
What’s happening ?

• The depth to water in wells increases

• The flow of rivers and and streams declines
• Soil starts to dry out, plants die
• Weather is getting hotter and hotter
• Cracks appear in the earth
• The land is barren and covered in thin dust
Consequences

• There are short and long term

consequences with any drought of nature
dependence on water. Drought effects
economic environment and social
resource. Drought can also affect people’s
health and safety
Solutions

• We can prevent from droughts by using water in

proper ways, growing plants as much as we can
avoid deforestation. Nations must limit the amount
of greenhouse gases emitted into the Earth's
atmosphere.
My feelings

• I think that we should do as much as possible to avoid

drought to happen and help animals and people who can
not survive under such conditions
