Introduction To Angiography

Angiography is a medical imaging technique that uses radiopaque contrast agents and x-ray imaging to visualize blood vessels and organs. The main components of an angiography machine include a generator, x-ray tube, flat panel detector, g-antry, and console/monitors. A C-arm device is preferable for angiography as it allows rotation of the imaging system rather than the patient. Digital subtraction angiography is considered the gold standard technique. The angiography team includes an interventional radiologist, technologist, nurse, and other specialists if needed.

Introduction to
Angiography

What is Angiography?
is a medical imaging technique used to visualize the inside of
blood vessels and organs of the body, with particular interest in
the arteries, veins, and the heart chambers. This is traditionally
done by injecting a radio-opaque contrast agent into the blood
vessel and imaging using X-ray based techniques such
as fluoroscopy.

• Main Components:
I. Generator
II.Tube
III.FPD
IV.Gantry( LC- arm)
V.Console
VI.Monitors
3
Angiographic Equipment

• A C-arm device is preferable

• the equipment can be rotated rather than the
patient when visualization of the catheter is
critical
• simultaneous biplane
visualization exposures
are needed to reduce the
number of injections
of contrast required

The Angio TEAM

• Radiologist (Interventional)
• Angio Technologist
• Nurse (Radiology)
• Anesthesiologist (if needed)
• Other specialists (if needed)

DSA: Digital subtraction

angiography

• This is considered the gold standard of vessel imaging.

Biplane angiography
8 Angiographic Equipment

Generator:
• This must be a three-phase or high-
frequency 12-pulse machine and at least
1000 mA to accommodate the rapid, short,
and high exposure values required in
angiography

Tube Ratings
X-ray tube:
• High-speed rotating anode tubes. The object of an
angiogram is to produce the highest quality
radiographs in the shortest time possible
• a 0.3 mm small focal spot will produce the best
detail
• tube rating can be exceeded because of the rapid
succession of exposures needed
• usual to have a 0.6-mm focal spot tube
