Role of Information Technology in Manufacturing Industries

IT plays a key role in manufacturing industries by helping to manage resources and ensure the right product is delivered at the right quality, quantity, price, and time. This includes implementing systems like ERP to facilitate information flow, MIS to manage inventory and scheduling, LIMS to ensure accurate lab data and testing, and decision support systems to help with planning and problem solving. Computer-aided design tools also help optimize the design process for micro-technological devices while meeting cost and process targets.

Information Technology

It is the branch of Engineering that deals

in the use of computers and
telecommunications that,
Obtain,

Store and

 transform information.

In today's time whether the

manufacturing enterprise produces
consumer goods or weapon system must
face challenges of unstoppable demands.
 The enterprise must aim for five “R’s” i.e
• Right Product
• Right quality
• Right quantity
• Right Price and
• Right time.

 IT is the entire cycle of product realization process,

from specification through design and production to
marketing and distribution.
Role of IT in Manufacturing
Technology
Enterprise Resource Planning
An Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)
system is an integrated computer-based
application,
used to manage internal and external resources,

including tangible assets, financial resources,

materials, and human resources.
Its purpose is to facilitate the flow of information
between all business functions inside the
boundaries of the organization and manage the
connections to outside stakeholders.
 Problem:
The problem occur mostly in manufacturing industries
is specifying raw materials and declining output.

 Solution:
ERP solve this problem by material resource planning
and manufacturing resource planning.
• Three fundamental components of a DSS architecture;
are:
• the database (or knowledge base),
• the model (i.e., the decision context and user criteria),
and
• the user interface
Manufacturing Management Information
System (MIS)

Inventory control programs are one component of

a manufacturing MIS that relies on the production
schedule.

 Manufacturing Requirements Planning (MRP)

programs help coordinate thousands of inventory
items when demand for one item depends on
demand for another. MRP systems determine when
finished products are needed, then work backward
to determine deadlines and resources needed to
complete the final product on schedule
LAB Information Management
System
 In manufacturing environments, the
laboratory operation must support the
production business by providing timely and
accurate information about  production
processes and product quality.
Decision Support system

 A decision support systems (DSS) is

a computer-based information system
that supports business or organizational
decision-making activities. DSSs serve
the management, operations, and
planning levels of an organization and
help to make decisions, which may be
rapidly changing and no easily specified
in advance.
 DSSs include knowledge-based systems. A
properly designed DSS is an interactive
software-based system intended to help
decision makers compile useful information
from a combination of raw data, documents,
personal knowledge, or business models to
identify and solve problems and make
decisions.
Role of LIMS In Manufacturing
Industries
 LIMS must ensure that the information generated
can be transferred rapidly and accurately to
people (which may include operators, customers
and sales personnel) or systems that require it.
LIMS may also be responsible for managing the
testing schedule. In addition, any LIMS within the
industry must be able to handle the testing of
raw materials, intermediate products and finished
goods--which of course require lot and batch
management and disposition facilities, as well as
the management of product specifications and
even product recipes.
 Typical information that a decision support
application might gather and present are:

• Inventories of information assets (including legacy and

relational data sources, cubes, data warehouses, and
data marts),
• comparative sales figures between one period and the
next,
• projected revenue figures based on product sales
assumptions.
Role of computer aided design
tool in manufacturing

It a process planning and optimization tool

which can be linked to commercially available
EDA tools. The increasing variety of available
fabrication technologies and materials for
micro technological devices make the design
process more and more demanding.
Engineers are no longer bound to only
functional aspects of the design but also have
to meet cost targets and optimize the process
flow itself.
