Project Plan Reality Check: Learn The Steps For Cross-Checking A Project Plan
The document discusses how to cross-check a project plan to verify its accuracy before final approval. It involves matching tasks, durations, resources, and budgets between the work breakdown structure, schedule, and network diagram. Errors found during cross-checking should trigger modifications to correct inconsistencies. Plans with over 3% errors require re-checking, while over 10% indicates further work is needed, focused on parts with recurring mistakes. Cross-checking catches errors and improves the plan's viability before implementation.

Project Plan Reality Check
Learn the steps for cross-checking
a project plan. What is Project Cross-checking? • Cross-checking the workability of a project plan is a process by which one person lists a procedure and another verifies it. – With two separate and independent bodies verifying the plan, chances for error decrease substantially. • Think of cross-checking as the reality check before final approval of the project plan. Cross-check! • Cross-check your planning efforts before submitting your project plan for final approval. – This involves a line-by-line match-up of the work breakdown structure (WBS), schedule, budget and network diagram. – Computer-based planning software is useful in this task; however, you’ll still need to personally and manually check the logistics and project flow. How to Cross-check a Project Plan-1 • From the network diagram, match the tasks, durations and dates to the scheduling worksheet. • From the network diagram, match the resources to the scheduling worksheet. • From the network diagram, match the task to the activities shown in the work breakdown structure. How to Cross-check a Project Plan-2 • Verify the numbers on the budgeting worksheet and re-total them to ensure they match your existing estimate. • Study the tasks on your project’s critical path. – Is the right path selected? – Are there any tasks that need more time? – Have you separated labor required from the duration on each task? How to Cross-check a Project Plan-3 • Verify that milestones make sense as a means of summarizing the main activities in a project. • Check to see if the start and finish dates are still reasonable. • Verify that you have accounted for all holidays and vacations in the schedule. How to Cross-check a Project Plan-4 • If you don’t have a work breakdown structure or a network diagram, it will be almost impossible to cross-check your project. • Larger, more complex projects will tend to have more errors than smaller, simpler ones. How to Cross-check a Project Plan-5 • If you find errors, you must modify the project plan to correct them. – If more than three (3) percent of the plan requires modifications due to changes, perform the cross-check all over again from the very start one more time after the changes are made. – Review your notes from the previous procedure. How to Cross-check a Project Plan-6 • A plan that changes more than ten (10%) percent during cross-check needs further work. – Look at the errors to see where they are: • Budget • Resources • Schedule – If you spot a pattern to the mistakes so that they appear mostly in one part of the plan, redo that part of the plan from the beginning. How to Cross-check a Project Plan-7 • All steps of the plan need to be run past the project team members before submission for approval. – If you have missed something, your project team should be able to help you fill in the gaps.
