Introduction to Computer

Network And Its Types

NETWORK:

Definition:
"A network consist of two or more computers that are linked
in order to share resources (such as printers and CDs ) exchange
files or allow electronic communication"

 Network on a computer may be linked through cables,

telephone lines, satellites, radio waves or infrared light beams.
An example of a network is the internet, which connects
millions of people all over the world.
TYPES OF NETWORK:
Depending upon geographical area covered by a network it is
classified as;
 Local Area Network ( LAN )
 Metropolitan Area Network ( MAN )
 Wide Area Network ( WAN )
1) LOCAL AREA NETWORK

"Local area network is a network that is used for

communicating among computer devices usually with in
office building or homes"
Main Features
1) LANs enables the sharing of resources such as files and hardware
devices that may be needed by multiple users.
2) LAN are capable of very high transmission rates.
Local Area Network
1) It has at lower cost.
2) It can be wired or wireless. Twisted pair, coax or fiber optic cable can be
used in wire of LANs .
Advantages Of LAN:
Speed
- Cost
- Security
- Email
- Resource sharing
-
2) METROPOLITAN AREA NETWORK
( MAN):
Definition:
"MANs is usually a large area network that usually
spans a city or large campus"
Main Features:
1) MAN is optimised for a larger geographical area than LAN
ranges from several blocks of buildings to entire cities.
2) A MAN might be owned and operated by a single
organisation, but it usually be used by many organizations and
individuals.
3) A MAN act as high speed network to allow sharing of
regional resources.
4) A MAN typically covered the area of 5 to 50 km diameter.
EXAMPLE
Telephone company network that provides high speed DSL to
customer and cable TV network.
3) WIDE AREA NETWORK:
Definition:
"WAN covers a large area such as a country continent or
whole world"
Main Features:
1) A WAN is two or more LAN ( local area network)
connected together. The LANs can many miles apart.
2) To cover great distances WANs may transmit data over
leased high speed phone lines or wireless links like satellite.
3) Multiple LANSs can connected together using devices such as bridges,
routers or gateways which enables them to share the data.

4) The world most popular internet is WAN.

4) PERSONAL AREA NETWORK
Definition:

" It is use for for communicating among computer

devices and computers ( including telephone) in close
proximity around a few minutes with in a room "

MAIN FEATURES:
1) It can be used for communicating between devices
themselves or for communicating a larger network such as
internet.
