OVERVIEW
Humans, as moral beings, are free to act or
not to act. Their will equip them with the
power to determine their actions. It is in this
light that humans differ from other creatures
and beings. In this lesson, we shall establish
the foundation of moral acts- freedom,
without which, we cannot talk about
morality.

individuals and society and is also described
as moral philosophy. The term is derived
from the Greek word ethos which can mean
custom, habit, character or disposition.
FREEDOM
Is the dependence of the “will” on the “self” or “I” for the
same to act or not to act. Will- (expression of) desire,
willingness
the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants
without hindrance or restraint.

is not constrained in its present state. ... A person has the
freedom to do things that will not, in theory or in

HOW IS FREEDOM A FOUNDATION OF ETHICS?
Freedom is an essential characteristic of
ethics because without it, meaningful
moral choices are impossible. Even if one
believes that there is no such thing as free
will, it is absolutely essential to the well-
being and stability of society that people are
treated as if they have the freedom to make
moral choices.
WHAT IS THE VERY FOUNDATION OF MORALITY?
Moral foundation theory argues that there
are five basic moral foundations: (1)
harm/care, (2) fairness/reciprocity, (3)
ingroup/loyalty, (4) authority/respect, and
(5) purity/sanctity. 5 These five foundations
comprise the building blocks of morality,
regardless of the culture.
WHAT ARE THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR MORALITY?
(ethics) The specific rule that one should do
no intentional harm, often considered the
bare minimum required for ethical behavior.
(ethics) A standard or principle upheld as
indispensable for moral conduct, whether
within a particular context or in general.
WHAT IS FREEDOM ACCORDING TO ETHICS?
Free Will describes our capacity to make
choices that are genuinely our own. With
free will comes moral responsibility – our
ownership of our good and bad deeds. ... In
the case of a really bad choice, such as
committing murder, we may have to accept
severe punishment.
WHAT FREEDOM MEANS TO YOU?
“Freedom means self-determination. It is
what enables humanity to achieve its
unlimited potential, without being beset by
forced diktats or imagined constraints.
Freedom is not just what makes dreams
come true, it makes dreaming possible. And
it obliges every free person to free another.”
WHAT IS FREEDOM AND EXAMPLE?
Freedom is defined as the state of being
free, independent, without restrictions, or
release from prison. An example of freedom
is a bird being let out of a cage. ... An
example of freedom is a prisoner being let
out of prison after serving their time.
