URBAN AREAS
• An urban area is characterized by
higher population density and vast
human features in comparison to the
areas surrounding it. Urban areas
may be cities, towns or conurbations,
but the term is not commonly
extended to rural settlements such
as villages and hamlets.

RURAL AREAS
• In general, a rural area is a geographic
area that is located outside cities and
towns. Administration of U.S.
Department of Health and Human
Services defines the word "rural" as
encompassing "all population, housing,
and territory not included within an
urban area. Whatever is not urban is
considered rural.

HAMLET
• A hamlet is a type of settlement. The
definition of hamlet varies by
country. It usually refers to a small
settlement in a rural area, or a
component of a larger settlement or
municipality. Hamlets are typically
unincorporated communities.

SETTLEMENT
• Settlement, locality or populated
place are general terms used in
statistics, archaeology,geography,
landscape history and other subjects
for a permanent or temporary
community in which people live or
have lived, without being specific as
to size, population or importance.

SETTLEMENT
• A settlement can therefore range in
size from a small number of dwellings
grouped together to the largest of
cities with surrounding urbanized
areas. The term may include hamlets
, villages, towns and cities.

CITY
• A city is a relatively large and
permanent human settlement.
Although there is no agreement on how
a city is distinguished from a town
within general English language
meanings, many cities have a
particular administrative, legal, or
historical status based on local law.

TOWN
• A town is a human settlement larger
than a village but smaller than a city.
The size definition for what
constitutes a "town" varies
considerably in different parts of
the world.

CONURBATION
• A conurbation is a region comprising
a number of cities, large towns, and
other urban areas that, through
population growth and physical
expansion, have merged to form one
continuous urban and industrially
developed area.

CONURBATION
• In most cases, a conurbation is a
polycentric urban agglomeration, in
which transportation has developed
to link areas to create a single urban
labor market or travel to work area.

URBAN PLANNING
• Urban planning (urban, city, and town
planning) is a technical and political
process concerned with the use of
land and design of the urban
environment, including transportation
networks, to guide and ensure the
orderly development
of settlements and communities.

URBAN PLANNING
• It concerns itself with research and
analysis, strategic
thinking, architecture, urban design,
public consultation, policy
recommendations, implementation and
management.
