Construction and Engineering Management: Engr. Albertsalud

Construction engineering management (CEM) combines engineering design with construction project management. It applies technical and scientific knowledge to infrastructure construction projects. CEM professionals oversee all stages of construction projects from planning to completion. They are responsible for tasks like scheduling, site planning, managing crews and materials, and ensuring projects meet requirements. CEM work involves both office and field work, with opportunities in areas like commercial, residential, transportation and utilities construction.

Construction and Engineering

Management
ENGR. ALBERTSALUD
1.1 Introduction
What Is Construction Engineering Management?
Construction engineering management (CEM) involves the
application of technical and scientific knowledge to infrastructure
construction projects. Construction engineering management blends
engineering (which focuses on design) with construction
management, which is concerned with overseeing the actual
construction.

1.1.2. Introduction
What Is Construction Engineering Management?
Construction engineering management refers to the use of critical
thinking in technical and scientific fields to improve a construction
project. This often involves designing and executing new solutions
and faster processes that can help overcome worksite obstacles and
improve efficiency. Construction engineering management can help
improve safety, productivity, natural disaster resilience—really any
aspect of the construction industry could be addressed by
construction engineering management

1.1.3 Introduction
What Is Construction Engineering Management?
MAPUA: BS CEM
This program is a combined study of basic civil engineering and construction management
courses. Graduates shall be knowledgeable on the fundamentals of structural and construction
engineering like design and analysis, material testing and quality assurance, building systems,
construction technologies, and surveying. Graduates shall demonstrate deep understanding of
management principles and its application that are essential in construction projects such as
economics, business, accounting, law, statistics, ethics, leadership, decision making and
optimization methods, process analysis and design, safety, and cost engineering.

The program’s thrust is to create and maintain an educational environment that shall enable
graduates to practice as successful construction engineers and managers for the advancement
of society and to promote professionalism in practice.

1.1.4 Introduction
What Is Construction Engineering Management?
Construction engineers design and execute processes for building
and maintaining the infrastructure of our world. The tools of the
trade for today’s successful construction engineer include the
following: strong math, science, and computer skills; creativity; an
aptitude for applying science and engineering methods to solve
problems; a love of building structures such as bridges, airports,
buildings, stadiums, dams, and highways; an interest in working
indoors and outdoors; initiative and a strong work ethic; the ability
to collaborate with diverse people; good communications skills; and
a desire to learn in a constantly changing environment.

1.2 History of CEM

The history of construction engineering and management education closely

follows the emergence of the construction industry as an economic force in the
United States. The initial introduction of programs in the post-World War II era
was followed by specialization and the introduction of graduate construction
specialties in the early 1960s.

1.3 How Does Construction Engineering
Management Work
Construction engineering managers are key players that bridge elements of
design and management to help push construction projects over the finish
line to their successful completion. Over the course of their career, a
construction engineering manager is likely to work on and oversee a broad
range of projects. This may include the design of drainage and sewage
systems, building construction, or even larger infrastructure projects like
developing highways or railroads. Others choose to focus on one particular
type of construction and build a career around it.

1.4 Common areas of focus for CEM include:

•Commercial business or housing construction

•Electrical system design
•HVAC/mechanical
•Highway/heavy construction (bridge building, airport
design, water waste management systems, etc.)

1.4.1. Careers in Construction Engineering

Construction engineers have the option of either working in an office setting or

out in the field. Oftentimes, it's a combination of both. Some construction
engineers focus on the design aspect, while others focus on the actual build phase
of each project. There are many career paths to choose from with a degree in
Construction Engineering:
•General contractors (bridges, roads, buildings, healthcare, data centers, sports
facilities)
•Owners and developers
•Mechanical/electrical contractors
•Renewable energies
•Consulting and design firms
•Oil and gas industry
•Aviation industry

1.5 Requirements for Construction Engineering
Management
Construction engineering managers must possess a thorough
understanding of laws, regulations, and building codes, especially those
that have a direct impact on the project at hand. They must also be able to
estimate the total cost of a given project with consideration to:

•Site inspections

•Drainage, sewage, and elevation level tests

•Equipment and materials

•Labor

1.5 Job responsibilities of CEM

As a construction engineer, your responsibilities may include:

•Planning and overseeing the construction operations of a project
• Conducting site layout
• Scheduling
• Selecting equipment
• Organizing the work crew
• Managing materials
• Safeguarding the environment
• Building temporary structures

1.5 Job responsibilities of CEM

•Designing both temporary and permanent structures
•Checking and modifying plans and specifications for
constructability, efficiency, and safety
•Developing cost estimates and preparing bids
•Utilizing Building Information Modeling (BIM) software for 3D
models
•Managing subcontractor firms
•Working with the owner to ensure that the project meets
requirements
•Solving job site problems, moving between the field and office
•Gaining additional education and training

1.6 Construction Engineering and
Management
•Construction engineering management involves combining
elements of design engineering, project management, and
other technical and scientific aspects of construction.

•Construction engineering management is applied throughout

a project's lifespan—from the initial planning stages to
construction labor to project completion.

•Job opportunities related to construction engineering

management are expected to grow almost twice as fast as the
average across the whole job market.
