Basic Mathematical Operations

This document defines and provides examples of basic mathematical operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. It explains key terminology for each operation such as addend, sum, minuend, subtrahend, difference, factors, multiplicand, multiplier, product, dividend, divisor, quotient, and remainder. Examples are provided to demonstrate how to perform each operation and how to read the expressions aloud.

Basic Mathematical

Operations
Types
 Addition: add or plus
 Subtraction: take away something from

something, reduce some amount from

particular amount
 Multiplication: when we multiply a number
 Division: divide something or break into parts
Addition
Example:
 12+13=25
 a+b=c

12, 13, a, b are called addend

C is called the sum
How to read?
 Twelve plus thirteen equals twenty five

or
 Twelve plus thirteen is equal to twenty five
Subtraction
Example:
8-3=5
8 is minuend
3 is subtrahend
5 is difference

Read:
 Eight minus three equals five

Or
 Eight subtracted by three is equal to five
Multiplication
Example:
 4 x 5=20

4 and 5 are factors,

4 is multiplicand, 5 is multiplier
20 is called product

Read:
 Four times five equals twenty
 Four multiplied by five equals twenty
Division
Example:
 30 : 6 = 5, 30/6 = 5

 7 : 3 = 2 remains 1

Read:
 Thirty divided by six equals five

7 is dividend
3 is divisor
2 is quotient
1 is remainder
