Introduction To Internet of Things (Iot)

Here are 5 objects or things at home that could potentially be integrated with the internet of things (IoT): 1. Thermostat - Could be connected to WiFi and controlled remotely via smartphone app. 2. Security cameras - Wireless cameras that can stream live video and record footage to cloud storage. 3. Light bulbs - Smart bulbs that can be dimmed, brightened, or turned on/off from a phone. 4. Door locks - Locks that can be locked and unlocked remotely without keys. 5. Appliances - Fridges, ovens, washers/dryers that send status updates and can be controlled from anywhere.

Introduction to

Internet of Things
(IoT)
Outline

•What is Internet of Things?

•How did this start?
•Why do we use internet of things?
Tell the truth …. how many of you could
actually make it through a day without your
smartphone?
What is IoT?
What is Internet?
The internet is a
telecommunications
network that uses
telephone lines,
cables, satellites and
wireless connections
to connect computers
and other devices to
the World Wide Web.
“Thing”
• Always equipped with some electronic elements.
• Embedded with electronic components (embedded system).

Categories of thing
Passive thing
- does not need power supply. (for example RFID CARD)
Active thing
- includes the sensor, it can send interesting data about current
events. (for example IP cameras)
Autonomous thing
- does not even require the controller to realize the proper
decision. (AI) example robotic mops
What is IoT?

•The Internet of Things (IoT) is the network

of physical objects or "things“ embedded with
electronics, software, sensors, and network
connectivity, which enables these objects to
collect and exchange data.
Definition of internet of things
• A network of items which is each item has embedded system
with sensors which are connected to the internet. (according to
IEEE)
• A global infrastructure for the information society, enabling
advanced services by interconnecting (physical and virtual) things
based on existing and evolving interoperable information and
communication technologies. (according to ITU-T)
• The IoT is the network of physical objects that contain embedded
technology to communicate and sense or interact with their
internal states or the external environment. (European
commission)
IEEE definition of IoT
• A network of items – each embedded with sensors – which are
connected to the Internet.
Why we use the IoT?

•We want to receive more data

•We want to control stuff
•We want to automate
•We want to make things faster

Local Storage
Local Processing
Sensors
Sensors

• Measures value
• Send raw data
• Low power
Local Processing and Local Storage

• Get data from sensors

• Process
• Send some data to
Networking and Internet

• IoT Gateway
• Gathers data from
sensor
Network types
• Personal area network (PAN)
• Local area network (LAN)
• Wide area network (WAN)
• Wireless LAN network (WLAN)
Cloud Processing and Storage

• Aggregate Data
• Storage
• Inferences
