DIFFERENT TYPES OF
COMPUTER
Based on Use
-Analog, Digital, Hybrid

Based on Size
-Main frame computers,
Micro computers, Personal
computers, Mini computers,
Analog Computer
• Almost extinct today
• a computer which is used to
process analog data
• Used for measuring time,
pressure, temperature, voltage,
speed and weight
Digital Computer
• uses digital circuits and are
designed to operate on two states,
namely bits 0 and 1
• they are programmable
• are either general purpose
computer or special purpose one
Mainframe Computer
• Used by large organizations for
highly critical applications such as
bulk data processing
• has the capacity to host
multiple operating systems
Micro Computer
• has microprocessor/
central processing unit
• It don’t occupy space as much as
mainframe, these computers can fit
on desks or tables and prove to be
the best choice for single-user tasks
Personal Computer
Comes in different forms such as
desktops, laptops and netbooks.

Desktop: are widely popular for daily

use in the workplace and households.
Laptops: run on a single battery or an
external adapter that charges the
computer batteries. It has inbuilt
keyboard, touchpad and a liquid
crystal display
Netbook: it falls in the category of
laptops but are inexpensive and
relatively small in size. It can access
internet by means of Bluetooth or Wi-
Fi communication.
Mini Computer
• Also called mid-range systems or
workstations
• with an input-output device such as a
tele-printer And at least four thousand
words of memory
• capable of running programs in a
higher level language.
Servers
• computers designed to provide
services to client machines in a
computer network
• have larger storage capacities and
powerful processors
• are large in size are designed to be
fail-safe and resistant to crash
Wearable Computers
• These computer can be worn on
the body and are often used in the
study of behavior modelling and
human health.
Tablet Computers
• mobile computers that are very
handy to use
• uses the touch screen technology

• Tablets come with on-screen

keyboard or use a stylus or
digital pen
