Lesson 2 - Performing Computer Operations

The document discusses common health risks from computer use and guidelines to avoid them. It identifies computer vision syndrome and repetitive strain injury as risks from prolonged screen time without breaks. It recommends adjusting chair height, adopting good posture, positioning the monitor directly in front, and taking regular breaks to rest eyes. The document also provides an overview of basic computer hardware components like the keyboard, mouse, monitor, and printer. It describes the system unit, motherboard, CPU, hard drive, and memory. PERFORMING COMPUTER

OPERATIONS
COMMON HEALTH AND SAFETY RISKS
GUIDELINES

Health Risks and Issues

The usage of computer systems exposes one to certain health
risks. Below are some of the identified health risks towards users
when operating a computer.
COMMON HEALTH AND SAFETY RISKS
GUIDELINES

Computer Vision Syndrome – is caused by the

discomfort felt by the eyes when using a computer. It
can be due to the continuous gaze on computer screen
for a long duration.

Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) - is the collective term for

disorder inflicted in the muscles, tendons, and nerves by
repetitive or forceful movements. RSI is common to
computer users who tend to sit still for extended periods
of time and to those who do not employ the proper
posture when using computer.
GUIDELINES TO FOLLOW TO AVOID IDENTIFIED
HEALTH RISKS AND ISSUES

 Adjust the height of the chair in a comfortable position

Adopt a good posture when using a computer
The monitor should be positioned directly in front of the users.
Make sure to take a break and rest
Rest the eyes away from the screen regularly.
BASIC COMPUTER OPERATION

A computer system can only be functional equipment when it has proper

hardware components and software installed in it. The hardware and software are two
main elements that comprise a computer system.
BASIC COMPUTER OPERATION
HARDWARE

1. KEYBOARD – a device that allows the user to

enter data and other information to the computer.
2. MOUSE – a device used to navigate around the
working area of a specified program
3. MONITOR – shows the output of a program.
4. PRINTER – a device that prints out texts,
pictures or images and other documents and files
from a computer.

HARDWARE

5. SYSTEM UNIT – also called the chassis.

6. MOTHERBOARD – a printed integrated
circuit (IC) board that contains chips, slots
and connectors. It is called the “heart” of a
computer.
7. CPU – which stands for CENTRAL
PROCESSING UNIT, is considered the
brain of the computer system because it
process all the instructions given by the user.
BASIC COMPUTER OPERATION
HARDWARE

8. HARD DRIVE – also called the a

hard disk, is a component used to store
data and files such as videos, pictures,
documents.
9. MEMORY – also called memory
module, is an essential computer
component that stores temporary data
that was processed by the CPU. It is a
chip or circuit board that is attached to
the memory slot of the motherboard.
BASIC COMPUTER OPERATION
SOFTWARE

1. SYSTEM SOFTWARE – a program that communicates and works with the computer
hardware to function as a computer.
a. Operating System Software – is created and designed to make the other programs in a
computer work correctly. It also manages the overall utilization of the software and
hardware installed.
Examples: Microsoft Windows
Linux
MacOS
iOs
Android
BASIC COMPUTER OPERATION
SOFTWARE

a. Utilities Software – are small programs that provide additional functions to

a computer. Utilities are created to protect and update a computer software
and hardware
Examples: Anti virus software
disk defragmenter
file compression
diagnostics
BASIC COMPUTER OPERATION SOFTWARE

1. APPLICATION SOFTWARE – or simply applications, include software packages designed for end-users. These programs
allow the students to create documents, browse internet, analyze and manage data information.
a. Word Processing Software – is application that allows their users to be able to create a documents that are text based.

WORD – most commonly known

and frequently used word processing
software.
GOOGLE DOCS – allows the user
to access their word documents
anywhere with the use of internet.
BASIC COMPUTER OPERATION SOFTWARE

a. Web Browser – is an application software that allows it users to access, display and
manage websites in the internet.
