 Research began in the 1960s.
 US Department of DARPA .
 Uses TCP/IP protocols and packet switching.
 Mode of modern communication.
 Source of updated news and information.
WHAT ACTUALLY INTERNET IS???.....
 Network of network joining many government, universities
and private computers together and providing an
infrastructure for use of
email,bulletin boards, file archives,
hypertext documents, databases
and other computational resources.

 Made possible for people all over the world to communicate


with one another effectively and inexpensively.
BRIEF HISTORY OF INTERNET
 1968- DARPA contracts with  1974- TCP specification by Vint
BBN to create ARPAnet. Cerf.
 1984- On January 1, the internet
 1970- first five nodes: with its 1000 hosts converts
1)UC LA enmasses to using TCP/IP for its
2)UC of Santa Barbara. messaging.

3)Star Ford
4) U of Utah.
5) BBN.
CREATION OF INTERNET……..
 SOLVED THE FOLLOWING CHALLENGES:
 Basically inventing digital network as we know it.
 Survivability of an infrastructure to send or receive high
speed electronic messages.
 Reliability of computer messages.
CLIENT/SERVER ARCHITECTURE
 Internet applications-based on client/server
architecture.
 Some application programs acts as information
providers while some application
programs acts as info receivers.
 Not basically one-to-one.
 Users runs client application
such as web browsers.
INTERNET ACCESS
 Communication between a residence or a
business and an ISP that connects to the internet.
 Access falls into 3 broad categories:-

1) Dedicated access.

2) Dial up access.
3) Wireless access.
INTERNET APPLICATIONS
1) WWW application.
2) Telnet application.
3) FTP.
4) News discussion groups.
5) IP.
6) VOIP.
UTILITIES OF INTERNET
Active agent Peer to peer interaction.

Has a social utility. Easily upgradable.

Decision maker. E-Commerce friendly.


Networking system.
Leads to media
convergence.
Fast and rapid medium.
UTILITY CONTINUED…..
 SOCIAL UTILITY of internet:-
1) NGO sites-
Charity, news and collections.
2) Blogs-
Rapid awareness, e.g. Tsunami blogs.
THE BIG QUESTION…
 Took 36 years for the internet
to get its first billion users.
 The second billion will probably be added by
2015, most of the new users will be in Asia.
THEN the question arises...
Should Internet be considered as a
Mass Medium?????
THE ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION IS…….
 The internet service has brought
a greater development to various
continents.
 Internet thus is an important

aspect in present scenario consisting


of social , economical and political sphere.
 Acting as a mode, faster and wider way of

communicating with each other; truly judges internet as


a mode of mass communication.

DISADVANTAGES OF INTERNET
 Theft of personal information.
 Internet addiction.
 Children and Internet.
 Threat of VIRUS.
 Spamming.
SUCH ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES
Are frustrating for all internet
users and so instead of just
ignoring it ,we should make an
effort to try and stop these activities
so that using the internet can become
that much safer.
Thus said; The advantages of
the internet far outweighs the
disadvantages and millions of people
each day are getting benefit from internet
for work and for pleasure.
CONCLUSION
 Global uses of internet have largely contributed the advancement of society.
More people are now turning to this phenomenon in order to have an efficient
lifestyle where the maximum number of tasks can be achieved everyday.
Although some would argue that people are becoming too reliant on internet,
others would argue that it is a freedom of choice and it is the individual’s
choice to be able to choose how much they should be using net per day and on
how much dependent they want to be. Ultimately, the internet Is a tool that is
effective when used appropriately and efficiently and it is at the discretion of
the individuals.
 Internet is a beautiful creation of modern computer science. If the usage is in
the right direction it could lead to so much development in
spreading awareness in each and
every field . SO LETS
TAKE THE BEST AND LEAVE THE REST.
