BADMINTON
COURT
usually laid on a wooden floor with synthetic mats
used as the surface of the court. The courts are
meant to provide cushion and comfort to shuttlers
who crisscross the playing surface to deceive their
opponents with smashes and clever strokes to win
points. Hence keeping the court surface prim and
proper is mandatory.
Badminton World Federation (BWF)
• Badminton Courts are the rectangular
surfaces used for the racket sport of
badminton. divided in half by a center
badminton net, courts are usually
marked for both singles or doubles
games with boundary widths varying
between the two match types.
Badminton courts should be
surfaced with safe flooring materials for
gameplay, that include wood, synthetic,
and rubber flooring options.
• A badminton court provides for two
types of competition -- singles and
doubles. The lines of the court are
accordingly drawn.
But the width differs
with the singles court
running wide till 5.18m
(17 ft), denoted by the
side lines, while for the
doubles court, the
width is extended to
6.1m (20 ft), marked as
the doubles sidelines.

The length of a standard badminton court remains

the same - 13.40m (44 ft) - for both types of
competitions.
The court has two halves measuring 6.7mm
6.7m (22 ft) each and separated by a
badminton net.

• The lines marking out the court

are easily distinguishable and
colored white or yellow. The lines
are 40mm wide.
• A court may be marked out for
singles only. The back boundary
lines also become the long service
lines and the posts or the strips of
material representing them are
placed on the side lines.
• The diagonal full length of the full
court is 14.366m.
There are various court dimensions of a badminton court and depending on the form
you want to play, there are certain lines that define a specific area. These dimensions or
lines include:

Short Service Line The Net Line

• Otherwise called the "Non- • As the name suggests, this

The Center Line

• This line basically divides a

badminton court from the
short service line to the back
boundary line.

Back Boundary Line

• This line is found and used in

both double and single plays.
It has been described as the
outermost backline of any
court.
 Posts
• The posts are 1.55m high from the surface of the court and
remain vertical when the net is strained.

• The posts are placed on the double side lines irrespective of

whether singles or doubles is played. The posts or supports
must not extend into the court beyond the side lines.

Net
• The net is 760mm in depth and a
minimum of 6.1m wide.

• The top of the net from the surface of

the court is 1.524m at the center of
the court and 1.55m over the side lines
for doubles.
Single Match Badminton Court
Measurement

•In a singles match, the dimensions of the court

is 17 ft x 44 ft (5.18 m x 13.4 m) with a total area
of 748 ft2 (34.75 m2), refer to Figure 2.1 below
for a visual.

•The length of a single court is divided into two

equal parts, therefore meaning that each part is
22 ft. Also, the distance between the service line
and net should be 6 ft 6 inches (1.98 meters).

•In singles, the service needs to be beyond the

short service line and within the boundary lines
Double Match Badminton Court
Measurement

For all double games, these measurements should be as follows:

•Length - 44 ft (13.4 meters)

•Width - 20 ft (6.1 meters)

•Like the single court, the length for a double court would have to
be divided equally into two parts: 22 ft each. Also, the distance
between the front service line and the line should be 6ft 6 inches
(1.98 meters). The rear service line should be 2 ft 6 inches.

•The doubles game, the service should be beyond the short

service line but it’s the long service line that acts as the marker
on the backcourt.
Dimensions of a Badminton Shuttlecock

•Badminton Shuttlecocks have a head diameter

of .98”-1.1” (25-28 mm) and increase to an
overall feather diameter between 2.28”-2.68”
(58-68 mm). The overall length of a shuttlecock
varies from 3.35”-3.75” (85-95 mm) and is
dependent on the lengths of the feathers and
the height of the head. The mass of a Badminton
Shuttlecock is between .167-.194 oz (4.75-5.5 g).
