Grade 10 Science Lesson 1

Volcanoes form where lava, rocks, and gases erupt from the earth's crust through openings called vents or craters. Topography is important for predicting lava and ash flows. Volcanologists study volcanoes and eruptions using tools like seismographs. The Pacific Ring of Fire surrounds the Pacific Ocean with over 75% of the world's volcanoes, including those in the Philippines, formed by tectonic plates interacting under the crust and mantle. The Philippines has 23 active volcanoes that have erupted in the last 10,000 years like Mayon, Taal, and Kanlaon volcanoes, as well as 26 potentially active and 281 inactive volcanoes.

VOL C A NOE S

VOLCANOES
• It is a conical mountain or hill where lava, fragments of rocks, hot vapor
and gas erupted from the earth’s crust through its crater or vent.

• Topography of a volcano is very essential for scientists to predict where

mudflows, lava flows, and Pyroclastic flows might go.

• Volcanologists are geologists who study volcanoes and volcanic

activities.

• Seismographs a important tool to predict whether the volcano might

erupt.
PACIFIC RING OF FIRE
• A 40 000-kilometer, a horseshoe-shaped
basin that is associated with oceanic
trenches, volcanic arcs, and plate
movements.

• Includes several volcanoes from the

southern tip of south america, up along
the coast of north america, across the
bering strait, down through japan, into
new zealand.
• Around 75% of the world’s active and dormant volcanoes can be found in
this region.

• Philippines is an archipelago surrounded by subducting plates that provide

an ideal condition for volcanic formation

• Tectonic plates- move towards or away from each other thus, forming
mountains or volcanoes.

• Magma is a hot fluid or molten rock beneath earth’s crust.

• Lava- when it comes out of a volcano.
ACTIVE VOLCANOES
• Are those that erupted within the last 10 000
years. This can be indicated by historical
reports or radiometric dating.
-As of 2008, phivolcs listed 23 active
volcanoes.
-Out of 23 active volcanoes, 21 had historic
eruptions.
ACTIVE VOLCANOES
Mayon Volcano
• It is the most active volcano in
the country located in Albay.
• It is famous because of its
almost perfect cone shape.
ACTIVE VOLCANOES
Taal volcano
• It is a volcanic caldera
composed of several active
volcanic landforms making it a
complex type of volcano.
ACTIVE VOLCANOES
Kanlaon Volcano
• It is another active
stratovolcano located in
Negros Oriental.
• Its latest activity was in June
18, 2016 according to
PHIVOLCS.
ACTIVE VOLCANOES
Bulusan Volcano
• It is located in the province of
Sorsogon
• It is a stratovolcano formed
inside a caldera.
• Its latest activity was in March
2, 2017.
• Potentially active volcanoes do not have any historical record of any
eruption but are considered as morphologically young.
As of 2008, phivolcs listed 26 potentially active volcanoes.

• Inactive volcanoes have not erupted for at least 10 000 years and are
not expected to erupt again in the future.
As of 2008, phivolcs listed 281 inactive volcanoes.
