What is weather?

o Weather is what the air and sky are like each day.
o The weather may be sunny.
o The weather may be cloudy.
o It tells how much sunshine or
rain is in one place.

o The condition of the air, the clouds, and the sun is determined by the weather.
o There are days when the sun is seen.
o There are days when clouds cover the sky.
o There are also days when rain falls hardly.
o There are many kinds of weather.
o The weather may be rainy, snowy, or dry.
How can weather change?

o Temperature is how cold or warm the air is. Sometimes the air feels cold.
Sometimes the air feels warm. Some days the sky is clear. Some days the
sky is full of clouds.
o Snow. It is a cold day.
o Warm. It is a warm day.
o It is windy day. Wind can change, too. Wind is moving air. Sometimes
wind moves slowly. Sometimes wind moves fast.
What does the sun do?

o The sun is a star that heats earth. Sun’s energy warms the land, air, and
water.

o The sun also helps to make wind, rain, clouds, and snow
What does the sun do to water?

o As the warms water, some of the water goes up into the air.
o You cannot see the water, but it is there.
o As water in the air cools, it turns into drops of water.
o When it is cold out, the water turns into bits of ice.
o Clouds are made of water and ice.
o The drops of water or bits of ice fall to earth as rain or snow.

describing temperature in A.D. 170.
o The first thermometers were developed in the 1600s.
o They were called thermos copes and used air to measure
temperatures.
o In 1664, robert hook developed a thermometer that used dyed
alcohol.

o The alcohol expanded in warm temperatures and contracted in cold


temperatures.
o Weather records kept from this period are the first reliable records we
have.
o Gabriel fahrenheit made the first mercury thermometer in 1724.
o He also made the fahrenheit scale.

o The boiling point on this scale is 212 degrees, while the freezing
point is 32 degrees.
o Most of the world uses the celsius scale, which was adopted in 1948.
