Signal lights and spotlights on ships act as navigational tools and as a means of sending messages to other ships or to
guard posts on the coast. Signal lamps are often also called Aldis lamps, taken from the name of the inventor, Arthur Cyril
Webb Aldis
Signal lights are very useful when the radio is in a damaged condition, or is prohibited from being used to avoid
enemies
Lights can also be used to transmit Morse code. An example of its use is by using a lamp, a flame or sometimes with a
flashlight. If using lights, the dot code is displayed with lights 3 times the number, while for the dot code it is displayed
using 6 times the number.
Signal lamp is a communication tool that indicates a certain number of codes by using light. Generally the code used is
Morse code. The inventor of the signal lamp is Arthur C. W. Aldis, because of that this tool is also often called the Aldis
lamp. In simple terms, signal lights are used by opening and closing a window or cover that is installed in front of the lamp,
with various durations. This process of closing and opening the window can be operated manually by pressing a switch, or
automatically. Lamps are usually also equipped with optical devices to clarify vision, and are easy to move. The resulting
light must reach at least 8 miles of visibility and be capable of emitting 12 words per minute.
MORSE CODE
• Morse code or Morse code is a code that uses a system of representation of letters,
numbers, punctuation and signals with the symbols of dots ( . ) and dashes ( – ) arranged
as certain characters.Morse code is used as a means of communication where the
communicator and communicant are in different places. The short sound is symbolized by
a dot ( . ) and the long sound is a line ( – )
MORSE CODE BENEFITS
• COMMUNICATION MEANS
As already explained above, the main purpose of making Morse code is to use it for communication. This
communication can be done over long distances.Currently, the use of Morse code still exists in the maritime world,
both nationally and internationally. The most widely used Morse code is the code to send an SOS signal in a
dangerous condition.
• GIVING A SECRET MESSAGE WITH A CERTAIN CODE
Morse code can be used as a secret message. The code of the secret message used depends on the user group.
Previously they could agree on a code to be used using this Morse code. Morse code is usually a secret message used
in intelligence.
• USED IN TELEGRAPH
At first, Morse code was created in the development of the telegraph. However, until now this code still exists in life.
SMAPHORE FLAGS
• smaphore flags are a variety of flags used to communicate with ships. The main system of
flags and related codes is the International Signal Code. Various navies have flag systems
with additional flags and codes, and other flags are used in special uses, or have historical
significance.
THERE ARE VARIOUS METHODS BY WHICH
SMAPHORE FLAGS CAN BE USED AS SIGNALS:
• A series of flags can spell a message, each flag representing a letter.
• ndividual flags have specific and standard meanings for example, diving support vessels raise the "A"
flag indicating their inability to move from their current location because they have a diver underwater
and to warn other vessels to keep clear to avoid endangering the diver(s) with their propellers.
• One or more flags form a code word whose meaning can be looked up in a code book held by both
parties. An example is the Popham numeric code used at the Battle of Trafalgar.
• In yacht racing and dinghy racing, flags have other meanings; for example, the P flag is used as the
"preparatory" flag to indicate an imminent start, and the S flag means "shortened course" (for more
details see Race signals).
