Convert the 13/36 m/s into kilometers per hour?
a) 1.2 kmph b) 1.3 kmph c) 1.4kmph d) 1.5 kmph

Here 3/36 m/s = 13/36 * 18/5

= 13/10 = 1.3 kmph

How many minutes Raman will take to cover a distance of 400
meters if he runs at a speed of 20 km/hr ?
a) 2 mins b)1.5 mins c) 1⅕ mins d) 2.5 mins

Raman's speed = 20 km/hr = 20 × 5/18 = 50/9 m/sec

⇒ 400 × 9/50 = 1⅕ mins

a) 150 kms b) 156 kms c) 162 kms d) 168 kms

12 m/s = 12 * 18/5 kmph

3 hours 45 minutes = 3 3/4 hours = 15/4 hours
Distance = speed * time = 12 * 18/5 * 15/4 km = 162 kms
Average
Speed
When a body travels different When the body travels at speeds of
distances at different speeds, the u and v units for equal distances,
average speed is the amount of i.e. the distance segments are in the
time taken to travel the total ratio 1:1, then
distance in total time,
A car travels 3 hours. It travels 30 miles in the first hour, 45
miles in the second hour and 75 miles in the third hour.
a) 50 mph b) 20 mph c) 45 mph d) 24 mph

miles in the second hour and 75 miles in the third hour.
a) 50 mph b) 20 mph c) 45 mph d) 24 mph

Using the formula: Average Speed = Total Distance/total time

Average speed  =  (30 + 45 + 75) / 3
=  150 / 3
=  50 miles / hour
John drove for 3 hours at a rate of 50 miles per hour and for 2

John drove for 3 hours at a rate of 50 miles per hour and for 2
hours at 60 miles per hour. What was his average speed for the
whole journey?
a) 54 mph b) 44 mph c) 52 mph d) 50 mph

Distance = Rate × Time

Total distance = 50 × 3 + 60 × 2 = 270
 Total time = 3 + 2 = 5
Using the formula: Average Speed = Total Distance/total time = 270/5
The average speed is 54 miles per hour.
A man goes from A to B at a speed of 20 kmph and comes back

to A at a speed of 30 kmph. Find his average speed for the entire
journey?
a) 20 kmph b) 24 kmph c) 18 kmph d) 16 kmph

Distance from A and B be 'd'

Average Speed = total distance / total time
Average Speed = (2d) / [(d/20) + (d/30)]
= (2d) / [5d/60) => 24 kmph
Relative Speed

Relative speed = Relative speed =

a-b a+b

If two objects are moving is opposite direction with speeds a and b

Relative speed = a+b = 60+30 = 90kmph
Converting to m/s 90*5/18= 25 m/s
Key Rule for Ratio based
Problems

If two objects have their speeds in the ratio a:b, distance covered by the
two objects in the same time will be in the ratio a:b and time taken by
the two objects to cover same distance will be in the ratio b:a.

The ratio concept can be applied only when one of the given distance, time
or speed is constant.

Relative speed between car and bus = 60-35 = 25 km/hr

Walking 6/7th of his usual speed, a man is 12 minutes too late. The usual

time taken by him to cover that distance is:
a) 1 hour b) 1 hour 12 minutes c) 1 hour 15 minutes d) 1 hour 20 minutes

New speed = 6/7 of usual speed

Speed and time are inversely proportional.
Hence new time =7/6 of usual time
Hence, 7/6 of usual time - usual time = 12 minutes
⇒1/6 of usual time = 12 minutes
Therefore, usual time = 12 × 6 =72 minutes =1 hour 12 minutes

New speed =3/4 of usual speed

Speed and time are inversely proportional.
Hence new time =4/3 of usual time
Hence, 4/3 of usual time - usual time = 16 minutes
⇒1/3 of usual time = 16 minutes
Therefore, usual time = 16 × 3 =48 minutes
