This document provides an overview of management consulting. It discusses that management consulting can be viewed broadly as any form of providing help to improve a situation without direct control, or more specifically as a professional advisory service contracted to help clients identify and solve management problems. Overview of Management Consulting

Discuss:

• What is management consulting?

• Why are consultants used?

• How are consultants used?

2
Nature and Purpose of Management Consulting

• What is management consulting?

Two basic approaches:

 A Broad Functional View

 A Special Professional Service

3
Nature and Purpose of Management Consulting

A Broad Functional View of Consulting

 Consultants are helpers, enablers, and assume that such

help can be provided by people in various position.

 A manager can act as a consultant if he or she gives advice

and help to a fellow manager…

 … or even to subordinates rather than directing and issuing

orders to them

4
Nature and Purpose of Management Consulting

A Broad Functional View of Consulting

 “… any form of providing help on the content, process, or

structure of a task or series of tasks, where the consultant is
not actually responsible for doing the task itself but is
helping those who are.” – Fritz Steele

 “You are consulting any time you are trying to change or

improve a situation but have no direct control over the
implementation…”

 “…Most people in staff roles in organizations are really

consultants even if they don’t officially call themselves
consultants.” – Peter Block
5
Nature and Purpose of Management Consulting

A Special Professional Service

 An advisory service contracted for and provided to

organizations by specially trained and qualified persons

 who assist, in an objective and independent manner, the

client organization to identify management problems,
analyze such problems, recommend solutions,

 and help, when requested, implementing the solutions.

6
Broad Functional View vs Professional Service

 Two approaches are complementary rather than conflicting

 Hence, management consulting can be view either as a

 Professional service or
 A method of providing practical advice and help

 To improve
 management & business practices
 Individual & organizational performance

 Transferring to clients (value added) knowledge required for

managing and operating businesses and other organizations
