Function as mathematical models can be
written in the form y=f(x).

The following illustrative examples will show us how to

derive function models:
Mathematical Model – a function that
represents relationships between two or more
different quantities.

Patterns observed in everyday life can also be

expressed as mathematical models to predict
the change in the dependent variable based on
the change in the independent variable.
EXAMPLE:
A rock climber drops a stone from a high cliff.
Below is the table of the value of the variables,
which are time and the distance covered by
the stone dropped from the cliff.
Transforming a Function
1.
5𝑎 = 2 + 3𝑏 Cross Multiplication
5𝑎 − 2 = 3b Transpose
5𝑎 − 2 = Divide both sides by 3
3b 3 3 and do the cancellation
5𝑎 − 2 =b
3
Piecewise Function - defined by different
equations or formulas on different domains

EXAMPLE:
Marie rides a jeepney to go to the market which is
14 km away from her house. The fare rate for the
jeepney ride is ₱8.00 for the first 4 km and an
additional ₱1.40 for every kilometer.

a. What mathematical model/function can be drawn

out from the given situation?

b. How much will Marie pay when she reaches the

market?
a. What mathematical model/function can be drawn out
from the given situation?

Solution:
b. How much will Marie pay when she reaches the
market?

Solution:

The model for this problem is given by rule

Evaluation of Function
Finding the value given algebraic expression is to
substitute the value(s) of the variable(s) given to the
expression.

1. 3xy – 2x + 5 when x = -1 and y = 2

Solution:

= 3(-1)(2) – 2(-1) + 5 → substitute the x = - 1 and y = 2

= -6 +2 + 5
→ simply
= 1
Operations of Function
The operations on functions use the properties of the
operations on algebraic expressions. It applies the rules on
combining similar terms and simplifying the results.

Let f(x) and g(x) be two functions defined in their

respective domains. These functions can be combined
to form a new function h(x) defined as follows:
