• Population size
• Composition
• Territorial disribution
• Component of changes such as:
• Nativity
• Mortality
• Social mobility
Age and Sex composition

Census 2011,
• Total population of India is
1,210,854,977(121cr)
• 623, 724, 248 (62.3 cr) males

• The total literacy rate in the country at present
is 74.04%

• 0-14 year – 26%

Age and sex composition
Age pyramid
• Population pyramid
• Represents age ans sex structure of a
population
• Double Histogram
• 2 Back to back Histogram
• one show no. of male and other show no. of
female of particular age group.
Bulge in middle and Narrow base and tip
Developing country Broad base and tapering end
Sex ratio
• Number of females per thousand males
• Important sensitive indicator of status of
women
• India -943 female/1000 male in 2011.
• Best: Kerala (963)
• Worst: Punjab (896)
• Affected by:
• Differential in mortality condition of male and
female
• Selective migration,
• sex ratio at birth
• Types:
• ƒ Sex ratio at birth
• ƒ Child sex ratio: no. of female child 0 – 6 years per
male child of same age per 1000
• ƒ Adult sex ratio

• Low sex ratio indicates:

• Strong male child preferance
• female foeticide
• Higher maternal moretality
• Gender inequality
• Female deficiet syndrome- Decrease in no. of
female population which lead to ecological
imbalance

• Interpretition of sex ratio:

• Evolutionary stable sex ratio/ ideal sex ratio =
1000(male=female)
• Favourable: Sex ratio > 1000(female)
• Unfavourable: Sex ratio < 1000(female
Dependency Ratio
• Proportion of person above 65 yr of age & children
below 14yr of age are considered to be dependent
to economically productive age group 15-64 yrs.

• Also known as Social dependency ratio.

• It reflect need for a society to provide for yonger
and older population group

• Total dependency ratio in india is 50.55% (41.1% of

young (0-14yr) & (9.4% old(>65yr)
Demographic bonus: period when dependency ratio
decline because of decline in fertility (dec. Fertility- dec.
BR - <14 yr – dec. dependency ratio.)

Demographic burden: increase in total dependency

ratio caused by inc. old age
Literacy rate
• Person is deemed as literrate if he or she can
read & write with understanding in any 1
language & who is above 7 yr of age.
• India 74.04%
• Best : kerela (93.91%), worst : Bihar-64%

• population density >390/km
• >75% population engaged in non agricultural
occupation
• Centralization – no. of person living together
d/t Occupation/industrialization
• Segregation:- no. of person living together d/t
• Sociocultural form
Life expectency
• At a given age, average no. of year which a person is
expected to live , Acc.to mortality pattern in that country.

• Best indicator of health status of population + country level

development

• INDIA life expectancy is 67.5 yr which is less than world

average lifespan of 72.81 yr.

• Life expectency will be reduced further due to pollution

• Target -70years till 2025

• Japan – highest life expectancy in world

• No. of person per square km.
• Ratio b/w total population and surface area
(land)
• Show conc. Of population in particular area
