Water Treatment Plant with RO for Mineral

Water
By Rahul Khedgaonkar
Steps and Equipment involved in the plant:
Pretreatment:
• Chlorine Dosing System
• Raw Water Pump
• Multi Media Filter
• Activated Carbon Filter
• Softeners

Post Treatment:
• Micron filter:
A)Bag Filters
B)Cartridge Filters
• Antiscalant Dosing
• High Pressure Pump
• Reverse Osmosis Unit
• UV Sterilization System
• Storage tank
Chlorine Dosing System
• Chlorine Dosing is done at the primary
storage tank stage.
• It is a process which usually requires 2-3
hrs and later this water is sent for
pretreatment process.
• Chlorine dosing is done for killing the
harmful bacteria present in the water but
as this chlorine can be harmful for the
body
• Later this is removed through ACF in
pretreatment.
Multi Media Filtration(MMF)

Multimedia Filters consist of a

cylinder which is 80% occupied
with pebbles, coarse silex, fine
silex and sand. The proportion
of the constituents are as
follows:
Pebbles- 20%
Coarse Silex- 10%
Fine Silex- 10%
Sand-60%
MMF provides filtration up to
20 microns.

Activated Carbon Filters
• Activated Carbon filtering is a
method of filtering that uses a bed
of activated carbon to remove
contaminants and impurities,
using chemical adsorption.
• Activated carbon works via a
process called adsorption,
whereby pollutant molecules in
the fluid to be treated are trapped
inside the pore structure of the
carbon substrate.
• This is mainly done to trap all the
chlorine content present in the
water due to chlorine dosing.
Softeners
• Softeners, as the name suggests is
used for softening the raw hard
water by removing the dissolved
salts like calcium and magnesium
which increase the hardness thus
making it unsuitable for drinking .
• In this process Ca++ and Mg++
ions are replaced by Na+ and K+
ions which reduces the hardness
levels.
• Then regeneration process is used
for recharging of the softeners.
Micron Filters

• Micron filter range in filtration from 0.1 to 10 microns.

• These filters come in two types :
a) Bag Filters b) Cartridge Filter
Antiscalant Dosing

The main objectives of antiscalant dosing are to effectively control

scales including:
• Calcium carbonate
• Calcium sulphate
• Barium sulphate
• Strontium sulphate
• Calcium fluoride
• Iron, colloidal material, silica, and other organic and inorganic
contaminants.
These contaminants cause scaling during the RO process which
damages the membrane reducing its life.
Reverse Osmosis Unit
• Reverse osmosis (RO) is a water purification technology
that uses a semipermeable membrane to
remove ions, molecules, and larger particles from drinking
water.
• Reverse osmosis requires a higher pressure for operation
therefore an HPP is used to overcome the osmotic
pressure.
• It consists of a semi-permeable membrane which allows
only the solvent to pass through it.
• The following figure shows the membrane of the RO units
and how it functions.
• RO cannot be cleaned using backwash or regeneration so it
has to be replaced after a particular period of time.

Ultraviolet Sterilizers
• Ultraviolet germicidal
irradiation (UVGI) is
a disinfection method that uses
short-wavelength ultraviolet (UV-
C) light to kill or
inactivate microorganisms.
• UV light is electromagnetic
radiation with wavelengths shorter
than visible light.
• This process kills the remaining 5-
10% bacteria and makes the water
ready for use.
• This sterilized water is then sent to
storage tanks for further use.
