What is COMMUNICATION?
It is derived from the Latin word “communis”
which means common.

The act or process of using words, sounds, signs, or


behaviors to express or exchange information or to
express your ideas, thoughts, feelings, etc. to
someone else
This involves the process of transmitting and delivering information to an
intended audience for whatever purpose it may be such as forming
relationships, exchanging meanings, making transactions, influencing

Literacy
The ability to identify, understand, interpret, create,
communicate and compute, using printed and written materials
associated with varying contexts.
Itis one’s cognitive ability to process information using written
materials in various context.
It involves a continuum of learning, wherein individuals are able
to achieve their goals, develop their knowledge and potential,
and participate fully in their community and wider society.
Media
The physical objects used to communicate messages including
mass media (radio, television, computers, film, etc.).
It is a source of credible information in which contents are
provided through an editorial process determined by journalistic
values and where editorial accountability can be attributed to
an organization or a legal person. In more recent years the term
‘media’ is often used to include new online media.
Information
A broad term that covers processed data,
knowledge derived from study, experience,
instruction, signals or symbols.
Media Literacy
The ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and create media in a
variety of forms. It aims to empower citizens by providing them
with the competencies (knowledge and skills) necessary to
engage with traditional media and new technologies.
This focuses on how a person identifies the roles and functions
of media institutions, how he scrutinizes the content and even
various information providers, and how he makes use of media in
a responsible, ethical manner.
Notice a number of American sit-coms. Who usually take the lead roles and
supporting roles? What is the representation between gender and race? How are
Asians portrayed in these shows? How do Asian dramas portray the Westerns? Are
they given strong or weak roles? Do they appear intelligent or less powerful?

The ability to recognize when information is needed, and to
locate, evaluate, and effectively communicate information in its
various formats.
Itrefers to one’s ability to search, access, consolidate, utilize,
and create relevant information for varying purpose.
It includes the competencies to be effective in all stages of the
lifecycle of documents of all kinds, the capacity to understand
the ethical implications of these documents, and the ability to
behave in an ethical way throughout these stages.

for democratic discourse, and to evaluate, produce and use all
of these resources in an effective, competent and ethical way
