We use Present
Simple for:

• Facts which are true all the time.

We use Present
Continuous for:
• Actions which are in progress at the
moment of speaking.
Why are you carrying an umbrella? It’s not
raining.

• Actions or situations around the moment of


speaking.
He’s studying Russian at university.

• Future arrangements.
I’m meeting Andrew tonight.
Some verbs which describes mental states, likes and
preferences or other states, are not usually used in present
continuous:

Special Cases

Some verbs (think, see, have) can be used as states or actions, with
different meanings.

• State: I think you’re wrong. (OPINION)

• Action: I’m thinking about my birthday. (MENTAL PROCESS)

• State: I have a sister. (POSSESSION, RELATIONSHIP, ETC)

• Action: I’m having a party.

Gradable Adjectives
• Describe qualities that can be measured in
degrees, such as size, beauty, age, etc.

• They can be used in comparative or


superlative forms, or with words such as
quite, very, really or extremely, to make
their meaning stronger or weaker.
Extreme Adjectives
• Do not have different degrees. They
describe qualities that are
completely present or completely
absent.

• Adjectives like ‘terrifying’, ‘freezing’,


‘amazing’ are extreme adjectives.
They already contain the idea of ‘very’
in their definitions.

• “Completely” or “absolutely” are


used with extreme adjectives.
