Climate and

The Different
Factors
Affecting It

A Strategic Intervention
Material (SIM) on Science 9
Objectives:
1. Differentiate climate
from weather.
2. Enumerate the different
factors that affect climate.
3. Explain how factors can
affect climate.
4. Appreciate the
importance of climate in
our lives.
PART 1:
GUIDE
CARD
Climate is the general
pattern of weather in a
certain area over a long
period of time. It is the
generalized weather of an
area.

Weather
What is the
difference Climate
between
climate and
weather?
Weather and Climate
If Climate is the general
pattern of weather in a
certain area over a long
period of time. On the other
hand, Weather is the
condition of the atmosphere
at a specific time and place.

LATITUDE
-it is the distance from the
Earth’s equator measured
in degrees.

How does the

latitude affects the
climate of a place?

LATITU
DE
LATITUDE
As the latitude or the
distance from the Earth’s
equator increases, the air
temperature is lower. Areas
near the equator have a
warm climate while those
far from the equator have
cold climates.

LATITU
DE
ALTITUDE
-it is the elevation above sea
level.

How does the

altitude affects the
climate of a place?

ALTITU
DE
ALTITUDE
As the altitude or the
elevation above the sea
level increases, the
temperature decreases.
For every 1000m of
elevation, there is a drop of
6.5ᴼC in air temperature.
Places with high altitude
have cold climates.

ALTITU

SURROUNDING BODIES
OF WATER
-water helps in regulating
the temperature.

How does the

surrounding bodies
of water affects the
climate of a place?

BODIES
OF
WAT
SURROUNDING BODIES
OF WATER
Areas near bodies of water
may have moderate climate as
there are bodies of water to
regulate the temperature. Water
absorbs more heat and releases
heat slowly making the change
in temperature moderate. Areas
without bodies of water nearby
may have extreme climate.

BODIES

TOPOGRAPHY
-it is a land feature in a
certain area like mountain.

How does the

topography affects
the climate of a
place?
TOPOGRAP
HY
TOPOGRAPHY
The mountain has two sides, the
windward and leeward side. On the
windward side, the mountain blocks the
wind forcing it to move upward and as
it moves, water vapor condenses to form
clouds and then precipitate. The air then
moves down towards the leeward side
and becomes dry and warm having less
precipitation.
Cold climate is expected on the
windward area because of the
precipitation.
Warm climate since dry and warm air
flows in leeward area and there is less
precipitation.

A1. The equator.

A2. They receive less

amount of heat.
A3. Places near the
equator receive more
heat making the air
temperature higher.

A4. As the latitude or

the distance from the
Earth’s equator
increases, the air
temperature is lower.

Different Cities in the Philippines and Their

Annual Average Temperature
A5. The coldest place is
Baguio. The hottest
place is Tacloban.

A6. They are in inverse

proportion relationship.
As the altitude increases,
air temperature gets
lower. Places with high
altitudes have cold
climates.
ACTIVITY CARD #4:
WHICH SHOULD I
CHOOSE, WINDWARD or
LEEWARD?

The two sides of a mountain, windward and

leeward side.
A7. On the windward side,
clouds are formed due to the
condensation of water vapor
that will soon develop to
become rain.
On the leeward side, there is
no cloud formation,
precipitation does not
happen, thus, the
temperature is high.

A8. The windward side

because precipitation is
expected in that area.
A9. The leeward side
because dry and warm air
flows in this area and there
is less precipitation.

A10. Mountain ranges

affect the formation of
precipitation.
