Definition of Network Operating System
 is the software that runs on a server and enables the server to manage
data, users, groups, security, applications, and other networking
functions.
 It designed to allow shared file and printer access among multiple
computers in a network, typically a local area network (LAN), a private
network or to other networks.
 It supports multiple user accounts at the same time and enables
concurrent access to shared resources by multiple clients.
Definition of Server

 is large system with higher processing speed , memory and hard disk
capacity whose role in a network is to provide services and resources to
users over a local network or the Internet.

 In an environment with more than 10 users.

 Server-based networks have become the standard models for networking
 Server-based networks divide processing tasks between clients and
servers
Advantage of Server
 Strong central security
 Central file storage which allows all users to work from the
same set of data and provides easy backup of critical data
 Ability of servers to pool available hardware and software,
lowering overall costs
 Ability to share expensive equipment
 Optimized dedicated servers, which are faster than peers
at sharing resources on the network
 Easy manage ability of a large number of users
Roles of NOS

Definition of Active Directory
 Active Directory is a database that keeps track of all the user
accounts and passwords in your organization.
 It allows you to store your user accounts and passwords in
one protected location, improving your organization's
security.
 Active Directory is subdivided into one or more domains. A
domain is a security boundary.
 Enables a single administrator to centrally manage resources
 Enables administrators to easily locate information
 Enables administrators to group objects into organizational
units
Core Components of Active Directory

Domains
Organizational Units (OUs)
Trees
Forests
Domain Controllers
 A Domain is a logical grouping of users, computers, and resources that makes up a security
and administrative boundary.
 It is not a physical entity and doesn’t identify the actual network topology or physical
location of the network, but it provides a way to secure and organize objects.

 Organizational units (OUs) are logical containers that are commonly used to define
departments or locations.
 It is used to organize users, computers and others resources to reflect administrative
divisions; delegate administrative authority and apply rights and permissions to users and
groups.

 A Tree is one or more domains that share a contiguous DNS namespace. Child domains
derive their namespace from parent.
 All trees in a forest must share a common directory schema and global catalog.

 A forest is A collection of one or more domain that share common schema,

configuration and global catalog.

 A domain controller manages information in the Active Directory database and enables
users to log on to the domain, be authenticated for accessing resources in the domain, and
search the directory for information about users and network resources.

Definition of DHCP
 is a client/server protocol that automatically provides an Internet Protocol
(IP) host with its IP address and other related configuration information
such as the subnet mask and default gateway.
 DHCP allows hosts to obtain necessary TCP/IP configuration information
from a DHCP server.
 It is a protocol IP address to the client computer or any device in a
network
Benefits of DHCP

 Reliable IP address configuration.

 DHCP minimizes configuration errors caused by manual IP
address configuration, such as address conflicts caused by the
assigning the same of an IP address to more than one
computer at the same time.
 Reduced network administration.
 DHCP includes the following features to reduce network
administration:
– Centralized and automated TCP/IP configuration.
– The ability to define TCP/IP configurations from a central location.
– The ability to assign a full range of additional TCP/IP configuration
values by means of DHCP options.
Definition of IP Address
• An IP address is an identifier for a computer or
device on a TCP/IP network.
• Networks using the TCP/IP protocol route messages
based on the IP address of the destination.
 A 32-bit address used to identify a node on a network.
 Each node on the network must be assigned a unique IP
address, which is made up of the network ID, plus a unique
host ID.
 This address is typically represented with the decimal value
of each octet separated by a period (for example,
192.168.0.1).
Methods of Assign IP Address
1. Static (manually assign an IP address):
 static : is assigned by administrator person manually.
 It take several time to assign IP address to all client computer in a
network
 Best used for permanent services like a file server.
 Basically you want to assign static IPs to end devices that you want to have a
permanent IP address, that will remain in the network and is vital that the IPs do
not always change.
 Static is a assigned IP address where you assign the IP for the TCP
2. Dynamic (address given automatically by DHCP server):
 Dynamic: It assigned by using DHCP with out administrator attention
 it is the best way to assign IP address on a short period of time.
 The most obvious advantage is that you don't have to manually assign an address
to each end user device!
 This is best when you have a large volume of users in a network that come and
go. It also allows for easy scalability.
 Dynamic IP address is an addressed that is leased by a DHCP server

Definition of Domain Name System
 It is internet service that translate Domain Name to IP
Address b/c Domain Name are alphabetic they are easier to
remember for the user rather than IP Address
 system that is used in TCP/IP networks for naming computers
and network services that is organized into a hierarchy of
domains.

 It’s translates Internet domain and host names to IP addresses.

There are two lookup zone of DNS

1. Forward Lookup Zone

 Is using an Internet domain name to find an IP address.

 It converts Domain Name to IP Address

2. Reverse Lookup Zone

• Reverse DNS lookup is using an Internet IP address to find
a domain name.

• It converts IP address to Domain Name
