The military organization –

a knowledge-based organization ?
Knowledge-based organization
Two types of deterministic approach:

1. Starting from the tehnological aspects:

a collectivity of workers with intellectual
tasks, interconnected through a
computerized infrastructure

2. Starting from the organizational aspects:

an organization dominated by professionals, with a
reduced number of intermediary structures of hierarchic
management, coordinated by non-authoritarian means
(standards, norms, rules of cooperation)
To become a knowledge-based organization:
• Managers cannot continue doing what
they knew and what they used to do
into an authority-based organization

• Managers need new skills - knowledge is a resource

and an organizational process
• Knowledge management - a strategic activity of
motivating and facilitating of the processes of using
and developing the cognitive capacities of
organizational members, by the exploitation of their
sources of information, their experience and abilities
Into a knowledge-based organization:

• Members and managers are aware of explicit and

implicit knowledge accumulation, at individual and
group level

• Members and managers continuously expanding

their knowledge by fostering learning and
innovation and by capitalization of the results
Into a knowledge-based organization:
• Members and managers develop
their capacity to intelligent and
appropriate transform the
available knowledge into
successful actions

• Members and managers

recognize and manage
their own ignorance
Into a knowledge-based organization:

• The activities of knowledge production, innovation and

dissemination are not appropriate for an
authoritarian management and an hierarchical
control
• The distinguish between the formal and informal
relationships is blurred
Into a knowledge-based organization:
• The official control is replaced by self-control and
self-responsibility

• The managerial act is focused on the designing

strategic vision and system architecture, the
validation of proposals and solutions, the
facilitation of activities (promotion, motivation,
mentoring, moderation)
