Engineering Mathematics 2 DBM 20023 Application of Differentiation Madam Rusnani Binti Ali

This document discusses the application of differentiation to related rates problems. It covers rates of change of volume, area, radius, height and length. It also discusses rates of change involving any combination of two variables. Two example problems are included, one involving the rate of change of diameter of a spherical balloon as its volume increases, and another involving the rate of change of volume of a melting ice cube. The document concludes that understanding mathematical principles is important for solving real-world problems and developing new theories.

INTRODUCTION
Calculus ( differentiation and integration ) was develop to improve this
understanding .

Differentiation and integration can help us solve many types of realworld problems .

We use derivative to determine the maximum and minimum values of particular

functions.

Derivatives are met in many engineering and science problems .

The rate of change - ROC - is the speed at which a variable changes over a specific
period of time. ROC is often used when speaking about momentum, and it can
generally be expressed as a ratio between a change in one variable relative to a
corresponding change in another; graphically, the rate of change is represented by the
slope of a line.

Change

A spherical balloon is being inflated so that its volume is increasing at the rate
of 10cm3/sec. Find the rate at which the diameter is increasing when the
diameter is 20cm?

CONCLUSION

Mathematics is an intrinsic part of the problem-solving, investigation,

testing, design and analysis work . It makes it possible to develop a
comprehensive data-base of information in a cost-effective way.
Rather, the principles of past findings must be understood as a basis
for drawing out further solutions, thereby enhancing and developing
new theory to fit the real world. Researchers and graduate
practitioners, having a very strong understanding of the principles
behind the known theory and the basis on which it has been
developed, are needed to be able to extend and apply that theory
appropriately in the practical environment.
