Objectives:
DIFFERENTIAL
EQUATION:
GROWTH AND
DECAY
A Differential Equation is an equation with a function and one
or more of its derivatives:
Important terms:
Particular Solution – it can be obtained if an initial condition is given.
Therefore, the equation is
Example 2
◦
Find the equation of the curve that satisfied the given conditions:
At each point (x,y) on the curve, the slope is 2x + 1. The curve passes through the point (-3,0).
GIVEN:
Initial condition: (-3,0)
Therefore, the equation of the
curve is
Differential Equation: Growth and Decay
◦
• As the population increases at a
given time “t” the growth rate also
increases.
Where:
• k is called the continuous
f (t) = value at time “t” growth rate if it is positive, or
C = is the value of the function at time t = 0, initial value the continuous decay rate if it
is negative
k = rate of growth (when >0) or decay (when <0)
t = time
Example 1
Exponential Decay
A discovered element when Exposed on the surface of earth becomes radioactive. How long will it take for the
element with mass of 5 grams to decay to 2 grams if the half-life of the said element is 17,900 years. (Half-life is
the time it takes for half of a substance to decay.)
t = 0, f (t) = 5
At 17,900 years, t = 17,900, f(t) = 5 ÷ 2 = 2.5 C = 5
𝑙𝑛 𝑒 𝑥 = 𝑥
Therefore, the rate of decay
is .
f(t) = 2, k = 0.0000387, C=5, t = ?
Therefore, it takes approximately 23,676.76 years to decay a 5
grams element to 2 grams.
Example 2
Our equation 1 is ,
Our equation 2 is
◦
Equating equations 1 and 2, we have:
Where, for equation 1 and for equation 2,
Solving for the initial diameter, we have:
f(t) = 5, t = 2, k = 0.16,
Therefore, the initial diameter of the colony on
the first day it was introduced in the pond is
3.6 centimeter,
Remember:
• In solving differential equations gowth and decay we have
many solutions, and different rule that we have to consider like
applying the properties of exponential and logarithmic
functions.
• As the population increases at a given time “t” the growth rate
also increases.
• k is called the continuous growth rate if it is positive, or the
continuous decay rate if it is negative.
Activity
In a liquid culture the amount of bacteria doubles every 5 minutes. If the amount of
the bacteria present initially is 2,000, how long will it take before there will be
100,000? The amount of bacteria increase exponentially.
Solution:
When t = 5, y = 2,000 × 2 = 4,000
Activity
When t = ?, f(t) = 100,000
