- The document proposes a modified cascaded multiport converter using fuzzy logic control for switched reluctance motor (SRM) based hybrid electric vehicle applications.
- The converter allows flexible energy conversion between a generator, battery bank, and motor. It also achieves battery management functions like state-of-charge balance control and bus voltage regulation.
- By integrating battery packs into the converter, multilevel bus voltages and current capacities are obtained. This can accelerate motor excitation/demagnetization, extend the speed range, reduce switch voltage stress, and improve torque and efficiency.

By integrating the battery packs into the AHB converter, the cascaded BM modules are designed to configure multilevel bus voltage and current capacity for SRM drive, which can accelerate the excitation and demagnetization processes during the commutation region, extend the speed range, reduce the voltage stress on the switches, and improve the torque capability and system efficiency. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed cascaded multiport SRM drive are verified by the experiments on a three-phase 6/4 SRM.

Introduction • With the growing concerns of fossil fuel crisis and environmental issue, the electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) have drawn increasing attention due to their reduced fuel consumption and enhanced energy efficiency. • To improve the motor performance over wider speed range, many voltage-boosting converters are developed in the SRM system. A four-level and a quasi-three-level converter are respectively proposed in to achieve fast current excitation and demagnetization processes. • Although a variety of multilevel and multiport converters have been previously proposed to support multiple driving and charging modes for better motor performance, there are few schemes to consider the battery management (BM) issue in the SRM-based EV and HEV applications. In practical applications, the state-of-charge (SOC) imbalance caused by the manufacturing variability and degradation with use easily leads to overcharge, over discharge, and even fatal damage of the battery cell, which may further cause the failure of whole battery bank • In , to build the variable voltage level and provide higher current capacity, the whole battery bank is divided into many battery packs connected in series, and each pack has several battery cells connected in parallel. By controlling each cell with one switch, the SOC balance is achieved and the fault-tolerance ability is improved.

Conclusion In this study, a cascaded multiport converter is proposed for the SRM-based HEV. By adopting the battery packs into the AHB converter, the reliable energy conversion is achieved among the generator/ac grid, solar panel, the battery packs, and the motor. Number of driving modes, regenerative braking modes, and charging modes can be flexibly selected in the proposed integrated converter topology. The converter has the capability of providing the demanded power by load in absence of one or two resources. The promising performance of the converter and employed control method offer a high reliability for utilizing the converter in industrial and domestic applications.
