1. Type of Vehicle
The amount of total load acting on vehicle helps designer to calculate the tractive effort needed
to move the vehicle. For example touring bikes require a very powerful engine because they are
used for long rides and hence need to able carry the baggage of the rider and also need to
provide suitable speed.
3. Required Power Output
The calculated required power output helps to decide various parameters of the engine like effective
pressure, volumetric efficiency, combustion efficiency, etc. The required power output affects the
engine design. All the design calculations depend on the required power hence required power with
optimum parameters in the design.
4. Required Maximum Speed
Characteristics of the vehicle decides the maximum help decide the range of maximum
speed range of vehicle. For example Mopeds do not require a lot of speed as they are
basically used for normal travelling and 60kmph is enough whereas Sports bike may require a
speed of around 300 kmph as it meant for racing.
5. Space Availability
Space availability mainly depends upon the overall dimensions of vehicle. Overall width of vehicle
helps to decide the number of cylinders and configuration of cylinders. Overall length helps to elect
between transverse mounted crankshaft and longitudinal mounted crankshaft.
6. Location of Engine
Location of the engine is either at the rear or at the middle of the two wheelers. Location of engine affects
overall dynamics and handling of vehicle. Most rear engines are inclined because vertical engines generate
adverse effects at the time of braking. Whereas in mopeds the frame itself works as vehicle body and
contains fuel tank above engine and hence engine is assembled below the lowest portion of frame.
7. Characteristic Speed Power Curves for
Engines
At low speeds the engine provides low power. But as
power incises and reaches its max, it starts decreasing with
increase speed due to improper fuel burning and other
factors. Power curve hence helps in selecting the proper
power required for reaching the certain speed. This helps
to decide the engine category of end power, mid power, or
early power engines.
8. Torque Curve for Engine
It shows the different torques for different engine speeds. Low
speed engines with high torque is required for endure bikes,
medium speed and medium torque for street commuters, low
speed medium torque for cruisers and high speed high torque
for sports bike.
9. Brake Specific Fuel Consumption OF
Engine
Brake specific fuel consumption is defined as the heat energy consumed by the engine to
generate unit brake horsepower. It provides us with the efficiency of the engine. It helps in
selecting the optimum engine with lowest operating cost. Lower the BSFC the better fuel
efficiency is obtained . The lowest fuel consumption is obtained at speed where we get the
maximum torque.
10. Number and Diameter of Cylinders
The power developed by an engine is directly proportional to the square of the cylinder
diameter and the number of cylinders. But, the weight is directly proportional to the cube of the
dimensions of the engine. So with increase in the dimensions the weight increase more quickly
than the power. This puts limit of power increase with increase in diameter of cylinder. Hence
another method is to increase the number of cylinders. So depending on the vehicle the number
and diameter of cylinders is chosen.
11. Power Per Litre
This criterion helps the designers in developing light weight engine with sufficient power output.
This is mainly used for improving performance of engines which can be achieved by increase in
compression ratio, use of improved material with high quality, or by accepting lesser factors of
safety or endurance. For engines the power per litre may be increased just by making the
cylinder smaller in dimensions or by increasing the number of cylinders.
