Similar Figures Grade 9

Two figures are similar if they have the same shape but not necessarily the same size. Corresponding angles of similar triangles are equal, as are the ratios of corresponding sides. Triangles are similar if they satisfy the AA, SSS, SAS or RHS similarity tests, which compare equal angles or equal ratios of sides between the triangles.

SIMILAR FIGURES

-The figures are similar if

they have the same shape.
It’s okay if they do not
have the same size.
The sizes are different but
the shapes are the same.
When two or more figures have the same shape but
not necessarily the same size, the figures are said to
be similar. Like the objects below, they are in
different sizes but have the same shape.
Are the triangles below similar?
Corresponding angles
<A <X
<B <Y
<C <Z
If the corresponding angles are EQUAL, the triangles
are similar.

If the ratios of the corresponding sides are equal then the
triangles are similar.
Properties of Similar Polygons
Two or more polygons are similar if
1. their corresponding angles are equal.
2. the ratio of their corresponding sides are
equal.

We say that is similar to . In symbol, we write .

AA Similarity Test
If 2 angles of a triangle are equal to the 2
corresponding angles of an other triangle,
then the two triangles are similar .
