Unit Conversion and Scientific Notation

This document discusses unit conversion and scientific notation for junior high students. It provides: 1) A chart showing the metric system prefixes from exa to milli used to modify base units and their corresponding powers of 10. 2) An explanation of positive scientific notation where numbers are written as the first digit times 10 to a power that positions the decimal point correctly. 3) A brief mention of negative scientific notation and an example of converting a number less than 1 to scientific notation.

Positive Scientific Notation
Scientific notation also called standard form is a special way of writing
numbers.
Like this:
700 = 7 x 100 = 7 x 10² or 7 x 10^2
4,900,000,000 = 4.9 x 1,000,000,000 = 4.9 x 10⁹ or 4.9 x 10^9

So the number is written in two parts:

- Just the digits (with the decimal point placed after the first digit),
followed by
- X 10 to a power that puts the decimal point where it should be.
