Calculating Speed Time and Distance

The document discusses speed, distance, and time calculations. It provides the three formulas for calculating speed, time, and distance. These formulas are: Speed = Distance/Time Time = Distance/Speed Distance = Speed x Time Several examples are provided that demonstrate how to use the formulas to calculate speed, time, and distance in different scenarios.

Speed, Distance & Time

Speed, Distance, Time

Calculations
The aim of this lesson is to
be able to use the correct
formulas to calculate
speed, distance or time
Reminder: How to change minutes into a decimal

15 mins = 0•25 hour

So: 3 hours 15 mins = 3•25 hours

30 mins = 0•5 hour

So: 7 hours 30 mins = 7•5 hours

45 mins = 0•75 hour

So: 2 hours 45 mins = 2•75 hours
The 3 formulas for Speed, Time & Distance:

Distance Distance
Time = Distance = Speed x Time
Speed = Speed
Time

Solving for Speed Solving for Time Solving for Distance

Remember them from D

this triangle: S T
Average speed is a measure of
the distance travelled in a given
period of time;
A windsurfer travelled 28 km in 1 hour 45 mins.
Calculate his speed.

Distance
Speed = D
Time S T
28
=
1•75 1 hour 45 mins

= 16 km/h

Answer: His speed was 16 km / hour

If a car travels 100 kilometers in 2 hours,find
the average speed.
Given: T= 2 hours
D=100 km
S=?
Solution: S=d
t
S= 100 km/2 hours
S= 50 km/hr or 50 kph
Answer:The average speed of the car is 50 kph.
Distance is a total length of
space between two positions.
A salesman travelled at an average speed of 50 km/h for
2 hours 30 mins. How far did he travel?

D
Distance = Speed x Time
S T

= 50 km/hr x 2 hour 30 mins

2•5 hr
= 125 km

Answer: He travelled 125 km

Vincent’s motorcycle’s average speed on a
motorcycle is 50 km/hr.If he drives it for 4 ½
hours, how far does he travel?
Given: S= 50 km/hr
T= 4 ½ hours
D=?
Solution: D= s x t
= 50 km/hr x 4 ½ hrs
=225 km
Answer: He can travel at a distance of 225
kilometers.
Time is the quantity measured
or measurable period during
which an action, process, or
condition exists or continuous.
A train travelled 555 miles at an average speed of
60 mph. How long did the journey take?

Distance D
Time =
Speed S T

555
=
60

= 9•25 hours = 9 hours 15 mins

Answer: It took 9 hours 15 minutes

Drew drives at an average speed of 45 mph on
a journey of 135 miles. How long does the
journey take?
Given: D= 135 miles
S= 45 mph
T=?
Solution: T= d/s
=135 miles/ 45 mph
=3 hours
Answer: Drew’s journey takes 3 hours.
