LESSON 6
OBJECTIVES:
Define verbal communication, explain its nature,
and discuss its functions and characteristics.
The Verbal Communication is a type of oral
communication wherein the message is
transmitted through the spoken words. Here the
sender gives words to his feelings, thoughts, ideas
and opinions and expresses them in the form of
speeches, discussions, presentations, and
conversations.
Factors that affect verbal
communication:
•Tone of voice
•Use of descriptive words
•Emphasis on certain phrases
•Volume of voice
Almost every job requires workers to use
verbal communication skills. That’s why
verbal skills are highly ranked on the
candidate evaluation checklists used by many
job interviewers.
What Are Verbal Communication Skills?
Effective verbal communication skills include
more than just talking. Verbal communication
encompasses both how you deliver messages
and how you receive them. Communication is a 
soft skill, and it’s one that is important to every
employer. 
Types of Soft Skills
Soft skills include the personal attributes, personality traits, and communication abilities
 needed for success on the job. Soft skills characterize how a person interacts in his or her
relationships with others.

Nothing beats verbal communication. 


During an in-person meeting or training session, participants
can ask spontaneous questions, get immediate answers and
fully understand the situation or task at hand.
Verbal Communication Increases Motivation

Words of appreciation from a manager boost the confidence level


of employees.
Verbal Communication Helps Save Time

Example: Giving instructions verbally, as opposed to in a memo


or via email, means you can explain the brief and objectives for
the project properly and clarify any sticking points before an
employee begins her work.
How to Improve Your Verbal Communication Skills
If you feel your communication skills are lacking, you can
improve them by reading books about professional and
personal development, or other relevant topics which
expand your vocabulary and sharpen your intellect.
