Introduction to information
literacy
What is literacy?
 the ability to read and write.
 ability to use language, numbers,

images, computers, and other basic


means to understand, communicate,
gain useful knowledge, solve
mathematical problems and equations.
Information Literacy
 the hyper ability to know and
recognize when there is a need for
information.
 to be able to identify, locate, evaluate,

and effectively use that needed


information for the issue or problem
at hand.

needs
 Determining sources of information
 Locating or searching for information
 Analyzing and evaluating the quality of

information

Information Literacy standards for higher Education

An information literate person should


have standards to:
 Identify information needs and determine

the extent of information needed..


 Understand the structure of information;

how is it produced, disseminated,


organized, cataloged, stored, and
retrieved, and how these factors vary by
discipline.

 Locate ,retrieve and evaluate appropriate
sources of information.
 Use indexes and other search tools

effectively and efficiently to find specific


resources.
 Determine the audience's needs and the best

presentation format; know the standards and


criteria for presenting information in the
relevant subject/field/discipline

those materials. i.e., author name,


publisher, ISBN, series, ...
Importance of Information Literacy

Lifelong Learning

 It means you keep on learning your


whole life.
 Lifelong learning is defined as

"all learning activity undertaken
throughout life, with the aim of
improving knowledge, skills and
competences within a personal, civic,
and/or employment-related perspective".

inclusion, active citizenship, and personal
development, but also self-sustainability, as
well as competitiveness and employability.
How to become more effective
lifelong learner?
 Make conscious decision to be a lifelong
learner
 Dare to dream big
 Visit the library regularly
 Become better browser
 Try new things often.
