Voltage Profile Improvement and Loss Minimization in A Transmission Line Using Fuzzy Logic Based Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) Proposal

This thesis proposal outlines a study on using fuzzy logic-based unified power flow controller (UPFC) to improve voltage profile and minimize losses in a transmission line in northwest Ethiopia. The objectives are to analyze the existing network's losses and voltage profile, model and design a fuzzy logic UPFC control, and evaluate its impact on the transmission system using MATLAB. The significance is reducing costs, increasing transfer capacity, minimizing losses, enhancing reliability, and providing inputs for further research. The methodology involves literature review, data collection/analysis, system modeling/simulation, and discussing results.

 Introduction
• The electric power transmission system is used to transfer the bulk
power from long distance to the electric distribution system.
• The distribution system stepped down voltage and distribute to the
load centers.
• Recently, in Ethiopia the power transmission systems have been facing
many problems.
• The voltage fluctuation due to variation of load and power transfer
limitation occurred because of reactive power unbalances.
• There is an urgent need to increase the power carrying capacity of the
power transmission lines in order to minimize power loss and improve
voltage profile.
Cont..
• Power generating stations are mostly installed far away from the load
center due to environmental constraints.
• To meet the perpetually increasing power demand, utilities depend up
on the existing arrangements of power generation and transmission
lines.
• The power demand of existing systems can be improved by reducing
real power loss in the line with the help of FACTS device.

• FACTS device enhance the stability of power system with its fast
control characteristics and continuous compensating ability.
Cont.…
• Controlling of the power flow and increasing of the transfer capability
of the existing transmission lines are the basic objectives of FACTS
device.
• UPFC is one of the most versatile multi-functional new generation of
FACTS devices proposed by Gyugyi in 1991.
• In UPFC, the transmitted power can be controlled by changing three
parameters of power transmission line namely transmission voltage,
impedance and phase angle.
• FLC is proposed to overcome the problems occurred in UPFC and
used to provide the receiving end voltage constant in a transmission
line.
 Statement of the problem
• Recently, due to the continuous growth of average powered transferred at peak
customer load demand in each year the power transmission system operates at
heavily loaded lines.

• This results in power losses and voltage fluctuation which may lead to abnormal
operation of the power system.

• The main cause for this abnormal operation is unscheduled increment of customer
load demand.

• Due to the increment of customer load demand the power transferred to the load
also increased.
Cont.…
• So, building a new transmission line will not be an effective solution.

• Taking sample data from Bahirdar Substation II monthly load report of

230KV transmission network the active and reactive power loss at
average peak load demand in November is 2.9662MW and 11.07MVar
respectively.

• Therefore; to solve this problem, the EEP plants must have a

compensation mechanism for reducing power loss and improving
voltage profile by using Fuzzy based UPFC.
